Copy of letter we sent to Carrie the native animal killer

Carrie,

After reading your article in the Illawarra mercury, I must say that I am disgusted by your ignorance, behaviour and red-necked attitude!

The correct thing to do is to stand completely still (yes I have had to do this with a venomous snake that slithered between my feet) and the snake will leave and move on.

You are placing yourself at more risk by attampting to kill it, even if with a shovel. If you take an 'air swing' and come down leaning forward, you are placing your hands, arms and even face within striking distance, if it is venomous and chooses to retaliate. I bet the snakes you slaughtered were only trying to escape your frenzied advances and had no intention of retaliation!

You are certainly not the influence young children need in order to apprecate wildlife and respect all creatures great and small. You are not completely to blame though. People are not born with fear, you are taught to be fearful of certain things by your parents......I feel really sorry for your children!

Australia has a rich diversity of snakes of which only a very small percentage are venomous or dangerous. If you don't like snakes, go live in a city, better still do us all a favour and move to Ireland! You must have rocks in your head to move to an area that is surrounded by bushland!

BTW, we aren't Greenies. Just because someone believes all things deserve to live doesn't mean that they are greenies.
Turtles, possums, lizards and platypus beware of 'Carrie the native animal killer'. You see, it's not right to label people incorrectly.

Are you even smart enough to know the difference between a legless lizard and a snake? Just because it's brown doesn't mean it's a 'Brown snake'!

well said! why are these people always conveyed as heroes....the papers never publish stories about the guys and girls who come to peoples houses and take the snakes out of the danger zone..for everyones wellbeing. the people who are scared but know there is a better way than killing them are much more deserving of the media attention, as are the people who relocate the snake..

she just got a message from me..i didnt call for her blood, but did ask her to substitute the word "platypus" (another venomous native) for "brown snake" and consider how this would be considered by the public...

Carrie,

I read with great disappointment your article as it appeared in the Illawarra Mercury Thursday 10th May 2007, headlined “Snakes alive… I really didn’t know”

It escapes me why someone would write an article promoting the fact that they have broken the law, and saddens me to think that you are seemingly trying to pass yourself off as some sort of heroine for your actions.

May I ask how you were sure it was a Brown Snake? The sad truth is that it really could have been any kind of snake and your reaction would have been the same – and probably was(Never let the truth get in the way of a good story). I am appalled by the dismissive style that the article uses to refer to the legality of your actions and find it offensive that you refer to someone who happens to be better informed of laws relating to Native Fauna as “Bloody Greenies”.

Perhaps more disturbing is that it seems as though you are hell bent on instilling your own ignorant fears onto your children as demonstrated when relaying your trip to Australia Zoo.

hey cris I was a greeny for many years and still am in a way and I'm not abusive to animals and to tell you the trueth I love snakes much much more than fluffy critters. where is that woman from it is illegal in queensland to kill any type of snakes unless you have proof of being an aboriginal I was told it was a $40,000. fine for one snake I bet if she new before hand how much it is she wouldn't have trued to do that but have gotten a professional in to relocate it. What a bitch she sound like saying that all snakes can kill you or must be related to a killer anyway. humans do mor harm and damage than any animal could do and everyone thinks that if something kills a human at least once that all of them will so oh we must kill all of them first type thing doesn't matter what it is, it dies anyways. People want the controll over everything. And well about the greeny thing greenies will try save everything even reptile that are in great danger of being killed buy others.

thats my point I think somone or everyone that don't agree with her to report her to parks and wildlife

cheers jody

Isnt it illegal to kill any native wildlife?

As a general rule yes(except for fish, inverts some others), but there is an exemption for killing snakes that are considered to be a threat. Its fairly obvious she thought they were a threat so she wasnt infact breaking the law.

that is a good point but she could of gone inside and called a snake catcher she should be bash and choped up with a shovel and when the cops come i will just say that i felt threatend by her and that she is a potiential killer and they will just let me off

She didnt break the law at all, if you think she did what law did she break?

the RSPCA? pmsl, they only care about cute fuzzy critters like cats, dogs and roos. Anyone sending over the top 'greeny' emails will do more harm than good especially if they are abusive as im sure many would be.

cris I'm not sure what you mean by sending over the top greeny emails will do more harm than good.

sorry if I got affencive in my last reply to it I read it different to how you might have been saying it.

Recieved this reply.......

A salient and very public lesson learned. Maybe others will learn from it too.
Thanks for reading and for your feedback.

Do you think the writer of the article also wrote the reply?

Yeah perhaps although I have no doubt that everyone who emailed will recieve the exact same reply.

As for threat so if you go bush walking you can kill every think that look,s like a threat what bul@@hit As too all the people that think like i did when i read this , thread, thank,s for makeing me feel normal again as i seem to been shut down on every thing i said last night and wanted too do last night so cheer,s to you all and i do care

Killing a snake does not make ANYONE a HERO or HERIONE. It just means that they are plain ignorant. No one should be proud of killing a snake - wether it is venomess or not. I also have a fear of snake - except for the ones that we own - but I do not go around killing them because they come into my back yard. Most of the time if you leave them alone , they will go on their merry way., If not then call someone to move it for you
