Copy of letter we sent to Carrie the native animal killer
Carrie,
After reading your article in the Illawarra mercury, I must say that I am disgusted by your ignorance, behaviour and red-necked attitude!
The correct thing to do is to stand completely still (yes I have had to do this with a venomous snake that slithered between my feet) and the snake will leave and move on.
You are placing yourself at more risk by attampting to kill it, even if with a shovel. If you take an 'air swing' and come down leaning forward, you are placing your hands, arms and even face within striking distance, if it is venomous and chooses to retaliate. I bet the snakes you slaughtered were only trying to escape your frenzied advances and had no intention of retaliation!
You are certainly not the influence young children need in order to apprecate wildlife and respect all creatures great and small. You are not completely to blame though. People are not born with fear, you are taught to be fearful of certain things by your parents......I feel really sorry for your children!
Australia has a rich diversity of snakes of which only a very small percentage are venomous or dangerous. If you don't like snakes, go live in a city, better still do us all a favour and move to Ireland! You must have rocks in your head to move to an area that is surrounded by bushland!
BTW, we aren't Greenies. Just because someone believes all things deserve to live doesn't mean that they are greenies.
Turtles, possums, lizards and platypus beware of 'Carrie the native animal killer'. You see, it's not right to label people incorrectly.
Are you even smart enough to know the difference between a legless lizard and a snake? Just because it's brown doesn't mean it's a 'Brown snake'!
