Hi all,

got a question - my northern diamond python is now 9 months old and we went through a bit of a patch where she wasnt feeding..

now the interesting bit... i defrost the fuzzy mice in hot water and then she would just look at the mouse then for some reason - i tried having the mouse dry, then she would eat it.

however - i cant remember the last time she struck at a feed..? she seems to prefer to just constrict the mouse and then feed.

the last time she struck at a feed - the mouse had a bit of a blow out and there were guts everywhere. which was a good 5-6 feeds ago.. with all feeds since being only being via constriction.

any ideas??

Cheers,

My diamonds never strike at food they come over and take it out of my hand like a big puppy (very gently) they won't even try to constrict it.
I my experience diamonds are the laziest snake I've ever owned and will do or won't do anything to conserve energy.

If your "northern Diamond" (which is actually an Intergrade) is 9 months old, it should be on adult mice by now.

I have a children's python like this, won't strike but just opens her mouth and 'pushes' it down. I don't think you should be too fussed, the way I see it, as long as there getting the tucker in its all good :)

On the contrary to this, my Diamond is the only one of mine that strikes & "kills" her prey. My woma is actually the one who wins the prize of "most laid back" at feed time.

I guess this just reinforces the fact that all snakes are different.

Bredli smashes it then constricts it, wet or dry I prefer dry...

Kinda good in a way can just chuck it in come back 10 minutes later done = )

My stimmi does this. She used to strike (first few feeds after i got her) but these days she just grabs it gently from the tongs (considering dropping the tongs and just feeding her by holding it myself, but i find touching defrosted mice gross haha)

Sometimes i will hold onto the mouse after she grabs it and give it a little wiggle and she'll then coil around it. if i don't she just eats it normally without constricting at all lol. She's a good feeder though so can't complain :) very placid snake in all ways!

None of my snakes strike the like for it too be put down and then they will go over bite it and swallow lol!

my diamond has always been doing this. My bredli has just started. I found that if you wriggle the mouse in their face they strike..but my diamond sometimes doesent care if i jiggle it or not other than that dont worry

With my Diamond I just chuck it in the cage and I know I can come back to find it eaten. When she was younger I used to have to do a massive song-and-dance to get it eaten (making the mouse dance in the tongs, making it "whack her" in the head, just to get her enraged enough to take it ha ha).
I wouldn't be concerned, all snakes are different. I find the older mine get, the less concerned they get with actually striking it. FAAAAATIIIIIIES.

i believe she is diamond with a bit of coastal (i've been told anyway..)

at the moment she is still on fuzzy mice - and even then she has a fair lump.
now she seems eager to have multiple food items. i highly doubt she would get an adult mouse down.. she is still quite small.

when she was younger (around 3 months) she would strike and constrict every meal.

lm not too worried though as she is still feeding.

just thought it was a bit odd.

as the temps are warming up - she is really keen to feed.. been smashing them lately.
last 2 feeds she has had 2 mice.

she is also very active now.. get up in the morning she basking.. come home from work and shes out basking lol

I have a stimsoni that doesn't really strike either, it will gently grab the food item then constrict.

I'm thinking, if that snake was in the wild, it would go hungry a lot lol, there's no way it would secure a running prey item with that soft grab!

if it's feeding, no need to be alarmed, I do wish she would be more aggressive when it comes to feeding though...

Last I checked, snakes don't follow a set eating procedure. While it looks cool for us, sometimes it's just not worth the effort of smashing a prey item and they choose to just do it the easy way.

I wouldn't be too fussed if she is still eating
