For those of you who remember our sick coastal Nymph, something pretty horrible happened this morning :(. When I got up I saw he was roaming around the cage which is unusual so I thought it might be a good opportunity to see if he would eat something seeing as he hasn't eaten in so long. When he moves it's not the smooth movements of a healthy snake...it's kind of a bit shaky, not really bad but still not normal. Anyway, by the time I defrosted it (only a few mins cos I was just trying a pinkie mouse) he was doing something which looked awful  . Those weird tummy movements I had described in my last thread were REALLY bad and he was almost throwing himself around in the corner...he had his mouth wide open just holding it there and his stomach looked like he was trying to regurgitate something...like the opposite of what they look like when they're eating but much more violent. It probably lasted about 1 min or so and then he gave up and went moving about again. I have no idea what to do anymore. The vet says there's nothing left we can do and the only other theory we have is something Afro suggested...that maybe it's an allergy. Has anyone heard of an allergy in snakes? I've heard of skin problems due to allergies but not stomach inflammation. We're going to move him into a diff cage and change everything in his environment to see if it helps at all. Seeing him looking like he was trying to regurgitate made me think again that maybe there's something stuck in his stomach? When the vet opened him up he didn't find anything...but he didn't actually open the stomach itself.

I think I might call some interstate vets to see if they have any other ideas cos my vet said he can't do anything else. Can somebody recommend a good one? It's getting to the point where I think I can't just leave him like this anymore...

If you haven't already, make sure you quarantine him from all you other snakes. I would reccomend giving Dr Robert Johnson a call, I've known him for a fair number of years now and have to say he is an extremely knowledgeable person in the area of reptile medicine and is also very friendly and thoughtful. He is also one of Taronga zoo's main vets now.
South Penrith Veterinary Clinic: (02) 4721 4796.
Good luck, my thoughts are with you and your poor snake. :(

We took him to Jim Greenwood. We took him to Brendan to be sexed when we first got him about 18 months ago to be probed and he said it was a female even though he probed to 10 scales...everyone I've spoken to since then said 10 scales is definitely a male so I've kinda been hesitant to take him there again...plus he's REALLY expensive and far away. But having said all that I figure we're not gonna get any further with Jim so maybe I should at least call Brendan and see if he has any advice.

Thanks Austrelaps, I might give him a try too...especially if he's friendly! Maybe he'll be willing to give me some advice over the phone which a lot of vets won't do...understandable tho.

Both Brendan and Robert are excellent choices but I doubt Robert can do much over the phone. Trust Brendan, we all rely on him heavily for advice when we get stuck on hard cases.

Good luck Zoey, I hope it recovers , you should write up a full story about it, describes symptoms/treatment/investigation/ooutcome, it would be valuable first hand info for anyone elsewho experiences it in the future. best wishes nymph.

Hi Zoe, if you need to get your own vet to do a phone consult, try Dr Peter Wilson at Currumbin Valley Vet Hospital. 07 5533 0381. After spending ages trying to convince our vets to consult with him, they have finally done so and are rapt with his knowledge, help and information. We have phoned him a few times with questions and he has been more than happy to help us over the phone, send us information and even call us on the weekend in his own time. He is a specialist herp and bird vet and I can't recommend him highly enough as he genuinely cares about reptiles. He also looks further into causes of problems rather than just treating the symptoms and gets into treating animals with vitamins as well as medication, conditions, heating and any other contributing factors.

this may be a realy dumb question but do u use paper as you flooring if so were did you buy it. as i stoped when i found out my newsagence had there fumagated(can't spell) also have u done anything like clean his water bowl and touch something before hand like wash dishers/clothes. could it thave been poisend in any way (think hard about it)

thats my 5c worth

ashley

Inny I might look into doing something like that but I wanna try and find out what's going on first!

W4M I might try and give him a call too...I'm gonna have a lot of calling to do tomorrow lol

Ashley, we do use newspaper and that was the first thing Phil mentioned she could possibly have developed an allergy to. But maybe like you said someone fumigated something but god knows where it was because we usually use the local rag that we get all the time. It all started happening so long ago now that I'd have no hope of remembering maybe having contaminated a water bowl or something...I hope I didn't :(

i had "Exact" thing happen to my bearded dragon everything you described its so disturbing to watch and i felt so helpless.
open mouth uncontrolable amost like muscle spazms throughing himself against the wall with extreme force. he had swollen glands but i never found out what was wrong with him. he used to make sounds like he was vomiting but nuthing came up. i took him to brenden carmel (warranwood) and he said he never had seen it before but gave him VitiminB shots for appitite, i got fecaes test but came back negitive.

im still egar to find out what it was so hopefully we can .

Good luck hope he/she pulls through

Hey Lamu,

Do you still have the beardie? It's terrible to watch isn't it. I'm sorry to hear it happened to you too :( . We also had a negative faecal test :?. I might try and give Brendan Carmel a call now and see if I can chat to him

RE: Reply

Well that was completely useless...Brendan wouldn't speak to me and the woman on the phone wouldn't even let me tell her the problem! She said we'd have to go in for a consulation and because he's been to another vet it would be classed as a referral consultation which not only means we'd have to get all the records from th last vet but it would cost a whopping $99 to go on a Saturday! Don't get me wrong, I'm happy to pay for it but not if we're gonna go there and he's gonna say he has no idea what to do...which is why I was hoping I could tell them the situation briefly to see if there was any point going. Oh well, on to the next one I suppose...

RE: Reply

I hope she gets better for you Zoe, I am sure Brendan Carmel would be great in trying to help you out.
