buck,
fantastic reef setup. Im interested to know what type of filtration system you are using. I assume a mini reef and chiller, would love to know :?

Linda

I use a Deep Sand Bed for filtration as well as the live rock. There is a refugium in the sump as well as a protein skimmer. The protein skimmer is the only type of mechanical filtration I have. No chiller - I have fans installed in the hood of the tank to try and disperse heat and also contribute to evapouration(evapouration actually helps lower water temp.) and the house is airconditioned, but the tank still gets hot. I got home from work today and the tank was at 29.9 degC. At 31 things start to "melt down".

thought that was common knowledge. NSW's people are just immagrants from VIC, so we know that whole regon is screwed basicly.

I didn't believe in god until i had my first stubby of XXXX. But I'm sorry Lib I think we have more Vics here in Qld then Vic and Nsw combined.

Hix! Another bird keeper?
I myself keep finches, a past-time looked down on by other birders.
They're the best type of birds as i can plant out a large aviary and not have it destroyed by filthy parrots!
And Bryony, I started learning fire stuff at Sydney Uni Circus club (SURCAS) but have since finished Uni, and am skilled enough to teach myself from internet videos. Now I go down to Fire Night in Jubillee Park in Glebe on Thursday nights (from about 8:30-9:00 when it does'nt rain).
Usually a few fire twirlers turn up and we all teach each other what we know. Lotsa fun! and to everyone else- Beginners are always welcome!
-Henry
Hey henry, that sounds like a blast, i was at a bbq in strathfield last year and a friend of the hosts brought out the fire stuff and we all had a go, apart from a lot of black marks all over my clothes from where i kept loosing control of the pois and hitting myself with them, i think i did pretty good and had an absolute blast of a time!!!. Im surprised i remember though as i was really quite drunk after heavy participation on the wheel of goon.

Ok, my hobbies include photography, caring for all animals, i have currently 7 snakes(bredli, coastal, mds), 4 vitties, 3 dogs, a cat, and a hubby... heheh, in march im picking up 2 water pythons and 2 more bedlis cant wait, i also enjoy scuba diving but i cant do to much of that any more due to a car accident my back and the weight of the tanks out of the water have arguments with each other... :(, i love reading, especiallyt the funny posts on this site, and the quotes of bash.org, im currently reading Frank McCourts Angelas Ashes and laughing and crying and getting mad all the time while reading it too, i have to say, xxx is crap, it tastes to me like watered down cats piss filtered through a cow pat.... i dont mind a beer once in a while but it has to be carlton cold, at a nice 2.5 degrees. I also love swimming, excercising in my home gym, and driving, since moving to vic, ive done the great ocean road 3 times already, since july 04, i even did it on the scooter before i sold it, with my ex girlfriend half naked on the back, lol :), i love music, i find i have a song associatuion with every memory of my life, and when i hear them the memories all come flooding back very powerfully, i also love movie if you want to see a list of some 700 titles, send me an email to [email protected] with cd list in the subject line, i am an amatuer accupuncturist and am skilled in remedial, shiatsu and reiki massage and love caring for and healing people on request, if you live in melbourne and would like a cheap treatment, give me a call, you are welcome to drop by anytime. 0410675366 feel free to sell my phone number to a telemarketer, i love teasing them too... hehe. i love doing lots of things, but im too tired to think of anymore right now, but i too will try most things once if i am physically able to try them, i put on almost 100ks after my accident and am currently on the sureslim program to loose it again, so once im back to my old self, ill probably be back to my old wild doing stupid things self again too, hopefully :) :)

You might have to resort to frozen bottles floating Buck. Gotta do it myself with the seahorses, cant afford a chiller. Berlin method works quite well, just wondering if you clean/disturb the SB or not at all? If yes, do you have any probs with aerobic/anearobic balance or not? How deep is is your SB?
What are you using for a cleaning crew?

Our hobbies are Fishing, Camping, roaring up the local creeks in our tinnie(40hp motor), partying, GTF'sx5 plus 5 new thumbnail sized ones, pet rat Turbo(yeah she hasn't made it to the freezer like Dave wanted - LOL!), looking forward to our new MD hatchling(working on import permit and whatever else we need to organise). I also play guitar and 5 string banjo(time permitting) - very slack muso!

Let's see, Keeping native reptiles and fish, Sketching, Bush walking, Herping, and am starting to get interested in photography.

Unfortunately the frozen bottle in the tank doesn't do much for me. I have 3 x400w metal halide lights and close to 800L of water with the tank and sump combined so a few frozen bottles doesn't do a heck of a lot - unfortunately. The house being airconditioned has really saved me a lot of heartache and it's nice and cool for me too.
I try not to touch the DSB at all. The most important thing about a DSB is that it really has to be live i.e. it has to have a heap of little critters/worms etc in it to function properly. The easiest way to do it is to go down to the beach/lake/lagoon and take a few cup fulls of sand from a seagrass bed. They are usually loaded with stuff. The DSB started out at a level 10cm deep but as you can see in the pic the powerheads soon sorted that out so at a guess I would say that parts are a good 15cm while right at the front centre it is bare glass.
I have a few sea urchins, some turbo snails, and a couple of sea cucumbers as my cleanup crew.

If you are interested in any more info about any of this stuff or if you ever need any help with your tank follow this link ....

Thanks Buck, id be careful about seeding a sandbed from the ocean though, lotsa nasty hydroids lurking. best to seed it from another established tank imo. Thanks for the link mate! :D

Nothing nasty - everything serves a purpose. Every person I know with a DSB has seeded it from the ocean without problem.
