 news just in from my brother in law. He went to a petshop that sells herp supplies in richmond yesterday which had a scrubby and olive among other herps on display ! hes doesnt know much about snakes so I asked him what they were, He told me the lady told him a big one was a scrubby apparently a yearling about 7 ft and this other one was an olive etc, so I beleive him.
Apparently this woman has no idea its illegal, cant be long before word gets around, although she told him they were not for sale.
makes you wonder.

nsw cant have herps in there pet shops

but can they display them if they're not being sold?

check ur pm zoe have a proposition for you

I was under the impression that they couldn't have them on the premisis, for sale or not, and places like reptile barn in st marys have signs up apologising for this fact...

Just my 2cents

You can't have herps on your premises but I was speaking to the lady who runs Finland Aquarium and she has filled in a whole bunch of paperwork so that her, and she said there are about 2 others in NSW that can run husbandry courses and then through that sell them the herps once they complete the course, however, they may just sell them directly from the breeder to customer and the petshop gets a % - not 100 percent on the details.

yeah its good to be a qld'er to atleast we can advertise and im glad every time i get to pick up sum crickets i get to see how all the herps at my pet shop are doing lol

Re: RE: petshop with herps nsw

Hi all i actully started the reptile barn with its former owner .And in n.s.w you can not sell reptiles in pet shops legaly yet.or have them on display. Not even if you are running corses. But you can pay a licenced exsibitor and so long as you have appleid to the n.s.w national parks and wildlife service for a special permit for one day or the weekend. Displaythe reptiles for a special addvertisement.say like at a grand opening .Orif you are haveing a specail event. like the pet shop may make a push on cages onece every six mounths and haveing the reptiles in the cages helps sell them .But they must have applied and been granted the relavent permits.under no other cercumstances can reptiles be exsibited in pet shops in the state or n.s.w.hope this clarifies the issue regards shane from aussie_pythons

You can display if you have an exhibitors licence, which is extremely expensive and not really worth the trouble for a pet shop. Bigguy would br the man to ask about this.

"i'm not up to date on n.s.w laws in regards to herps on display, but in light of recent comments about pet-shops and their displaying of reptiles, were the snakes, displayed in respectable cages etc?............if so, good thing".

I don't know what the problem is about everyone saying you can't advertise in NSW. I regularly see ads in the Trading Post and our local paper selling herps. Also NSW people regularly advertise on all websites...HerpTrader, petlink, etc. Not only this but I've seen quite a few petshops with pin-boards up where people can stick a bit of paper with details of whatever they're selling...often reptiles.

Furthermore, everyone from VIC and QLD seems to have a problem with the way petshops keep their reptiles. If it's so bad for the animals why are you happy you've got them? I'm glad we don't.

I agree with simon, reptiles shouldnt be allowed to be sold in pet shops and there are plenty of places to advertise your herps...
