I don't know what the problem is about everyone saying you can't advertise in NSW. I regularly see ads in the Trading Post and our local paper selling herps. Also NSW people regularly advertise on all websites...HerpTrader, petlink, etc. Not only this but I've seen quite a few petshops with pin-boards up where people can stick a bit of paper with details of whatever they're selling...often reptiles.

In NSW you are allowed through herp societies. APS and other forums have been "interpretted" as online Herp Societies so advertising on them should not be a problem.

Jeff Hardy can probably clarify this for you.

Furthermore, everyone from VIC and QLD seems to have a problem with the way petshops keep their reptiles. If it's so bad for the animals why are you happy you've got them? I'm glad we don't.

Some shops in Victoria do a better job than others but IMHO none do it very well and some do it very very poorly.

Most of the sales though the Herp Trader are directly from the breeder and to my way of thinking this is a great advantage. To get animals to breed you have to be on the right track and if their are problems with the herp purchased the breeder is probably the best to advise you. Much of the advice I have heard from pet shops is beyond hopeless.

If anyone has seen the water python in a pet shop in watton st in werribee, you will damn the day vic ever let pet shops sell snakes, BUT i personally found it extremely difficult finding herps in NSW when i was first licenced though and ended up importing one from interstate, can we not find a happy medium, such as, say... 30 licenced herps petition needed to get a commercial licence or something like that.

My 2 cents

yeah something like that would be great. if it werent for a pet shop i dunno if i would have gotten a snake cos before i found aps i had no idea where to find breeders! perhaps pet shop staff should have to do something like a competency type course before they are able to sell them. that way they would actually have a clue what they're doing. i actually like the IDEA of pet shops selling them cos of the exposure to youngins and people who might be interested but not know where to start like me initially.

I can see the point in OuZo's wiew. Lot of people would like to start and do not know how. My opinion is that if petshop have licence to keep reptiles, they should be regularly inspected and if people who selling them do not have right information for buyer, or do not keep animals right, take the licence a way.

To may way of thinking pet shops should only be allowed to sell equipment, enclosures etc. That is where the profit is for them anyway. If they could not sell herp's then they would no doubt be happy to provide the names of breeders or of web sites such as the Herp Trader http://www.herptrader.com.au and all would be happy.

The breeders would be happy because they are finding a market for their prodgeny.

The pet shops would be happy because they are flogging the equipment, feed, enclosures etc. which is where their profit is.

The Herp Trader is happy because we are providing the service that connects breeders with those who have a growing interest in herps.

Happy Happy Happy :D :D :D - A win win situation.
