Would anyone be happy to show me how to probe pythons in Newcastle? I have 3 young spotteds that I would like probed. I have approached a local herp vet who was reluctant to advise me and I am not prepared to pay their $150 fee. I am however prepared to repay the person in rodents or beers.

BUMP. Can anyone help? I'm willing to travel a few hours up or down the coast.

go to mount hutton vet and see ray, he does alot of reptiles for a very low cost and is very good

Thanks wil I will look into it.

I was told that it can be dangerous to probe snakes at an early age. I was advised that 9 months of age, 50cm long and 2cm thick was too young and small to probe safely. That advice to me seems a little conservative. Can anyone confirm or deny? Thanks.

hey man, have you ever researched "popping", heres a clip of Ralph Davis who lives by the popping method.

Thanks stewy. Ill take a look. Good luck cooking your eggs bud.

The later you leave probing the more accurate it will be. Obviously younger animals are very fragile and its easy for the probe to be caught on a tissue fold so it doesn't measure the complete depth. I suspect a lot of the supposed problems with early sexing of GTPs relate to popping although no-one is going to admit to that. There is generally no rael need to sex young snakes. The most popular reason is so the new owner can chose a name which is not a good enough reason in my book to put the animal at risk. I just offer to sex the snake later when it has grown up.
