My Bro In-law wants to get his very 1st python. He doesn't want a normal carpet so he is thinking about a sandfire stimsons, can you please help with some info on them if you have owned them.. Eg. Temperament, and any special needs. All info appreciated! Thanks :)

We've just got one a couple of months ago- love their pattern! If you have a look on my profile you can see a picture of it. We got ours when it was 5 months old and have had it for 2 months. We haven't had any problems at all with her. She's a great feeder and has handled well from the start. At the moment we keep her in a sistema click-clack (I thinks it's 7 litres- you can get them from the supermarket) with a piece of dowel running across one end. Place a heat mat (around 5-8watt) under one end, so it's covering about 1/3 of the click clack and put a couple of toilet rolls in as hides- one up the hot end and one at the cool end. Then all you need is a water dish. Also a thermometer (temps at hot end around 32 C) and maybe a thermostat. Some people prefer heat cords. If you get a heat mat, get a reputable brand. There is a thread on here on how to set up click clacks. You can keep them in this for about 1 year. I would say if he like's these, they would definitely be a great first snake :)

Thanks for that Lisa5, I've told him all the basics as I've owned a few different pythons but Stimson is never something I've looked at, so unsure on how tame they can be, The one he is looking at getting is beautiful colors!! but no point him getting a beautiful looking python if it's temperament doesn't match it for his 1st

Pros - Easy to look after, good temperament
Cons - None I can think of?

My Stimson python is the most placid animal I've come across.. Depends on the individual snake, though.

Disclaimer: All snakes have individual temperaments.

My stimsoni is the most placid snake i've seen. I can do anything to it and it will NOT bite me (although feeding response is excluded, its a REAL strong feeder and if it smells food, it'll strike at anything but if it didn't do that i would be trying to find whats wrong with it). It even drinks out of my hand when offered. And some of them have some real stunning patterns. Great first snake too due to the size.

The only con i could really think of is the max size. I got myself a bredli after my stimsoni maxed out but thats because i want the best of both worlds. Now i have that with a large and small snake.

Yep, mine's the same. I can't get my Stimson to bite unless I cover my hands in the scent of a mouse or rat.. He's just too placid, almost like he has neurological damage ;)

Pros
-Usually very well tempered, but there is always the exception.
-Easy to keep, no special needs.
-Doesnt require a huge enclosure.
-They stay small, average about 1.2m.
-They are adorable :D

Cons
The only con for me is that they stay small, Im into bigger snakes.
Besides that I cant think of any :D

Thanks for your input SYNeR and Mace699. Sounds like a good 1st for him, and don't want to big. He loves my olive python but he is pretty worried about the bite. But it's a tiny juvenile ands feeding on pinky mice so bite won't be to bad and young enough to calm him down. Are they cage conscious?

Wow before I replied to those 2 I had 3 more replies... I'm a fan of the bigger pythons myself, but I do like the look of them!! My sister does have a cat so I'll defiantly let him know about the smells left on him or my sister

We have had a Stimson for almost a month now its my 10 year old sones snake. Handles and feeds real well no biting very placid and doesnt have any issues with us opening the click clack and putting our hands in. When put back into the click clack it investigates to see if we have changed anything then curls up for a nap. Its currently about to shed and hasnt changed in temperament at all

One con i can think of is that they tend to go off their food over winter and being his first snake, your bro in law could stress about it not eating.
Apart from that a stimson is a great snake for a beginner and has lovely patterns to match.

Thanks Nicki, I'm sure he will like to know that as he is marrying my sister soon and kids will come soon after

Thanks I'm sure he would stress a little.. I know I would be pulling my hair out by the end of winter too because I'll be the one he calls every day lol

My first snake was a stimo and I still have him he is fantastic, like others have said they are a good manageable size for a beginner easy to look after, I'm sure there out there but I have never come across a nasty one heck my three year old daughter can dive in and grab him out and roam around the house with him over her shoulder and he doesn't have a care in the world

My beautiful carpet and Olive are like that. So placid! but the size does change the nephews holding them, so a Stimson in the family will keep them happy...

I think the stimson is a good first choice, pretty bullet proof and easy to handle.
Someones already said it, but the only con is they go off theyr food during winter and become very dormant. Mine hides a lot. Carpets are more entertaining.

Couldn't possibly think of a "con" most beautiful natured snake I have ever had contact with !! :)

yeah my olive is just as nice but the size is a bit intimidating for some people. My coastal and centralian were both terrors as lil ones but their both settling down nicely
