Bit of a long shot as i've searched for hours online and done alot of ringing around but does anyone know how i could get in contact with a pug breeder ?

My girlfriend and I are recently moved into our first house together and im looking to get her a pug for christmas, any input is greatly appreciated!

theres a website called dogzonline.com.au which has puppies for sale from breeders that have advertised on there. It also usually shows the website for the breeder if they have one so you can use it to find websites then contact them about upcoming litters etc.
Or just search pug breeders (where ever you live) and there should be some breeders websites come up.

We got both our 2 pigs from breeders on dogzonline highly recommended no health problems beautiful dogs which are now 4 and 7 years absolute clowns :)

*pugs lol

I used dogz online to get in touch with an Akita breeder, its a great resource. You can view the pedigree of the pups in most before purchase.

I've contacted three breeders off of that website, each of them started going on about how many awards the parents had won and how they've come from imported bloodlines lol.

I do understand that pugs are a trophy dog and owning a pug is a hobby in itself to some people but i just want a dog not a super star lol

Which state are you in? There should be a breed club, especially for such a popular breed of dog. If you are in Victoria I would also recommend saffron on the hill. The are a pug breed specific rescue.

if you do choose to go the route of a backyard breeder as apposed to a show breeder, I would be sure both the dam and the sire have been hip and elbow scored, also pugs are prone to breathing and eye problems- so when purchasing a pups who parental history is not accounted for you are taking a risk. these checks now will save you $ down the track. vet bills are not cheap! a good quality and healthy pup is a worth while investment.

I understand a lot of people find pugs adorable, but don't you think that they are also the best example of how far we've crossed the moral line of breeding for traits at the expense of quality of life?

In a simple answer, No.

A pretty damn good example though...

Pugs are no worse than german shepherds whose hip go before their third birthday or dalmatians who produce a large number of deaf offspring, which according to any dalmatian breed club have to be euthanised. All our dogs have genetic problems

Very true, I just find pugs to have the biggest issues. roughly 30% need to have surgery to correct a fatal flaw in their airways before the age of 6 months.
to give them the cute curly pig tail, we've essentially bred them to have severe spina bifida.
There was a DNA test done of all pugs registered with the British Kennel Club; of over 40,000 dogs there was shown to be a genetic diversity of just 50 individuals, thats how inbred they were. And that was just the registered ones.

I just feel that pugs are the ones we have messed with the most for our own desires with the largest negative consquences on the animals themselves.
I find this morally corrupt and have a hard time accepting it.

Creating breed standards was the worst thing we humans did for our companion animals. When something is bred for looks not health, you know something is wrong. Now all our pedigree dogs have long lists of genetic diseases.

Best tell the cops and armed forces who have been using them for years ;)
They are only more prone to it, it's not a definite with that breed unless the parents had it genetically.

Apologies, I have 2, my uncle trains them for the cops and owns several and I grew up with them and I'm just slightly against the stigma surrounding them.

Anyway, Variety, where are you located mate and have you even thought of adopting? Might be another road to investigate if you were interested?

Agree, to a point.

Great call.
I love my Staffies, always have always will and over the years have rescued 3 from death row. 2 American and one English, all pures and all the most beautiful personalities you'd want in a dog.
It's not just aggressives or mongrels that end up at the shelters...

That further strengthens a personal thought of mine. There are no bad dogs, just bad owners.

Plus any animal up for adoption is usually vetted by someone who has years of experience in judging attitude and character of animals. An admirable trait.

Rescues don't accept people aggressive dogs. I am a great supporter of adoption. I have three purebred greyhounds that are the most wonderful dogs. I am always amazed the misconceptions people have about rescue dogs. My dogs all have to wear muzzles and aren't allowed off lead. Hence why people who don't know greys think they are vicious, when in fact you can't get a lazier more placid dog beside the stuffed kind. ;)

Agreed.

Shelters take them in, they just euthanize them though.
The greyhound rule sucks because as you say, laziest dog ever haha, I've seen greyhounds sleep more hours a day than cats...

Yeah the only time they are standing up is when they are eating and when I drag them along on walks. They are the dog you get if you don't have time for a dog :)

@ OP - most breeders will show their dogs. this doesn't mean they won't just sell you a family pet-pug. The breeder we got our dog from shows her dogs but she sells the litters except for 1 or 2 she might want for continuing breeding lines/showing.
