Picked this guy up today, not holding out much hope though, unfortunately. He was struck by a car on the Kempsey/ Armidale road and appears to have neuro problems. Bleeding from both ears, one eye unable to open and a dislocation of the jaw. Also has balance problems and walks in circles constantly. Unfortunately, also, no local vet available until Monday:(.

Set up a temp enclosure for him outside, hoping he makes it through the night.

If you dont want him dead avoid the vet. They will put him down but it might be the best thing for him as he seems to be in alot of pain
Good luck.

Thanks guys,

Though sometimes I have to wonder if leaving him be may be the better option for big, old animals like this guy. I suspect his home hollow was close by the road, as there's been little sunshine today and he probably warms up on the road before heading off for breakfast. He may have been more comfortable at home.
Captivity definately doesn't agree with them IMO. Must be pretty old, if all the fighting scars across his back are anything to go by.

Always seem to see them along that road, hope he pulls thru.

oh that looks nasty i ues to do rescues up in north queensland these guys would allways gome in from time to time haveing been hit buy cars most of them passed away from there injureise but. if there bleeding from the ears then enternal damige is likey and posibly the best thing to do if he servives till monday is to take him to a vet were thay can asses his injureies

How is the patient this morning IV?

He's in good hands with you - whatever decision you make, will be the best for the animal.

All the best with him/her, and please keep us updated?

Carolyn

thanks for all the kind words and well wishes. He's still with us as of this morning. Made his way under the lights last night for a bit of self medicating. That's gotta be a bonus:)!

thats fantastic news!!

beautiful temporary home you have for him, i bet hes stoked!!!

Great job; I have my fingers crossed for him. They are tough buggers, although the bleeding from the ears is a concern. All the best for his recovery, and once again good on ya and great job. :)

That's a really really REALLY IGNORANT thing to say!
We spend weeks on end nurturing all sorts of herps that are damaged seemingly beyond repair!
We don't just put things down - where there's life, there's hope.
GRR!

My local vet's a real diamond:)! In a relatively small town like Armidale, I consider myself very lucky that she takes an interest in herps at all, being a large animal specialist. She's even man handled big, angry EB's on numerous occasions and is always very enthusiastic about anything unusual. She has contact through Taronga and always does her research on a species before I bring it in. She's also managed my captive Lacies when the need arises.

A few more pics. He's inside ready for the vet tommorrow morning.

That's his bad side, notice the swelling and the tongue tip seems to permanently hang out one side of the mouth:(.
