Just picked one up on the weekend- a baby. Have done some research, but any extra tips would be good. We were told to keep it on a heat mat and mist once a day. Is this right? Using kitty's crumble as a substrate.

id take it out of that and use cocopeat, wouldnt really need a heat mat, what temp have you got it on?, i mist once every 5 days.

also, have alot of bark and rocks scattered around the enclosure

Just have it on top of the beardies enclosure- so warm heat comes through from the heat lamp (doesn't get very hot). So it is okay for it to get dry? Do you get the cocopeat from a pet shop?

Kitty's Crumble is made from coconut husks and is FINE for use as a substrate, I've used it with Rainforest scorps, centipedes, giant roaches with no dramas..

BTW On another point just make sure your not in a national park area because it is then illigal to collect wildlife (but if your allowed to collect fire wood I doubt it is a national park).

lol sorry quick google search and zac is right, i thought kittie crumble was a different thing.
that sounds ok lisa (heating), but i wouldnt really allow all of the lio's sub to get dry, as they are a rainforest species

Thanks Zac and richoman_3. My son's wanted one for a while now, so we finally gave in and got him one, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Yea , collected fire wood I'n my property. Have 60 acres. The claw on the little guy looks fat as, so that's a make?

Well, wouldn't it be advisable to research before you advise ?

Ok

Keeping these is dead easy.
No heat
Substrate should be coco husk or something similar without any fertilizers in it. I use the brand "Brunnings" which is available at Bunnings for $2 a cube which will last you life time.
Keep the substrate wet but not soaking
Have some foilage in there, leaves, bark ETC ETC

Food add a few woodies/crickets in every few weeks.

If growing it'll shed it skin maybe once or twice a year.

There is nothing more to keeping them apart from keep moist.

Follow what he said :), just to add to that, I stopped giving my scorps roaches as the species of scorpion are quite slow and roaches tend to be quick and burrow, you can try it see what happens but they never worked for me (unless you hand fed).

with these scorp i take 1 of the back legs of the crickets, you dont need to but its easier for them to catch.

Here is a website with a few caresheets on scorpions, none for rainforest scorpions but they are most similar in care to the Flinders Ranges Scorpion but like more moisture.

Hi,

Here pic as I spoke about.

Is this a male or female?

Can't tell from that picture. I have included a pic below of what you are looking for. If your scorp has a tooth and notch like this it is a male.

There is great information on them in the link below. Gestation periods for scorpions are quite long, 12-18months for this species, so don't be expecting much to happen quickly.
