Hey kids :D

Was just thinking about security and wondered how many of you guys have security systems set up to protect your herps (and anything else of value I suppose  ). How many reptiles or how much value in herps would you want to have before you bothered with a security system and how much would you pay for one?

:D

my security system is an 11 year old minni fox terrier... only cost $80 and she has never let me down... you couldnt get within 100m of my place with er the "alarm" going off..

We have a security system - though it wasn't set up innitially for the herps.
I am planning on adding to the system as soon as I have the $$ for it ;)
So I guess that that equals - when it's no longer just 'pocket money' that you're likely to earn from them, they're worth protecting :D

There was a presentation at the VHS a couple of years back on security systems. Soon after attending that meeting we installed an alarm system with cameras, the ability to call you etc. I don't wish to explain all the details but the bells and whistles on the system did not cost all that much. The system seems quite reliable and does not suffer from false alarms... except when you walk in with an arm load of shopping and cannot put it down with out going past the sensor.

For us it has proven relatively cheap peace of mind

The number of herps is irrelevant, SCUMBAGS will break in just for the chance of getting one lousy python or lizzard.

Security is a MUST and personaly, i mark all my snake enclousres DANGEROUSLY VENOMOUS even pythons just incase some punk does get in they might have second thoughts about shoving there hands inside.

Thieves are lower than a snakes belly  but unfortuanaatly are a fact of life.

cheers

I should answer seriously as this is a serious topic, sorry. I live in a security block of units with back to base alarm and bars on window. I rent but must admit it was a deciding factor in choosing the place. I think if I owned my own place I would put one in though.

what more could you need... just get yourself a yappy little dog and no one will get close enough to even know you have reptiles :)

ouzo i recon if i didnt have bud (my dog) we would have some other form of sercurity.. maybe a chihuahua.. hehee

to seriously answer your question, a monitored alarm as well as security cameras. In saying that, no system is foolproof. Almost all security cameras could be disabled by turning off the mains power to a house and even a monitored alarm would give a thief at good 15 minutes to grab what they wanted.

My seciurity system includes a herp-room with a high window, and 2 dogs who sleep outside it all day long! Add to that another alarm sensor and I reckon we're in business!! :D

keeping a machetti by ur bedside count?

ours is upstairs ontop of a book shelf :D. i got at least $600 worth of stuff/creatures in my room, most likely alot more. would a locked door be considered security?

Alarm, IR/daylight camera with video link, & an american pitbull with an attitude. If they get past that lot, there's me. Those that know me know what I mean.

A heavy duty UPS and a computer with cameras that automatically upload images to a web site does it for me! ;-) Cut the power? See if I care! :)

i dunno if i'm allowed the free plug, but i am a alarm technician in brisbane, and i am having a special atm, you get a NX4 security system with 4 detectors, keypad, siren and panel for $799 (usually $1199). comes with a 12 month warranty. system is either setup to call your mobile in the event of an activation or monitored back to base at an additional charge. call Aaron's Communications on 0406003523. i also do home theatre/phone & data points/intercoms/cameras etc.

Exactly, there are ways around the problem of getting your mains cut off.

IMO having the cameras there is good enough. You'll never stop the professional theif, but it stops the ones that are just thinking about it.

buy one of em "this house is protect by so an so" signs the security companys give you when you sign up. like having a nice sign, "its alot easier to break in next door"

sounds like someone shops at direct alarm supplies!!

i wired the bars on the windows and security door to an electric cattle fence generator. the room is also alamed (batt. back up). the boot from the cattle fence charger deters all but the most dedicated. and hopfully the alam will hinder those who still try
