we have bacl to base alarms wher if they go off police are there in a second and even if they do turn the power off our alarms still work so yeah thats us we also have a big hungry german shepard too which dont miond biting people who aint wanted

Yeah, Ive gone the whole hog, 2x alarms, 3x survalence systems, security doors etc, 2x dogs.

i mark all my snake enclousres DANGEROUSLY VENOMOUS even pythons just incase some punk does get in they might have second thoughts about shoving there hands inside

I do exactly this. Although Im lucky enough to live out on a farm so there is not many thieves around. Also i just dont go round telling anyone and everyone what i do and dont have. If i were in the city or town i would probably have higher security.

i can tell you... your twice as at risk on property, in the city, there are people watching. if you have dogs? they have bait... and the stoopid list goes on, i have reco'd alarms where the thieves were watching the house for months before they broke in, they know everything about the joint they're gunna roll. as if they'd break in without doing their homework.

After having been burgled twice in the last year I recently had a system installed, and I'm considering back-to-base (but I may be moving and B2B becomes problematic then). I had it installed not just for the herps but also for everything else (I had a digital camera and DVD player nicked the first time).

The second visit all they took were a pair of Coastals. And a pillowcase.

:p

I spoke to a policeman once about guard dogs.
He said that they are really only to keep kids away. Serious
thieves can stop trained dogs very simply.

He said they can use a spray bottle full of bleach. Spray the bleach in the dogs eyes and even the toughest attack dog will run screaming.

bull terriers crosses ,
that hang on gooood ,
dogs can smell scrum and no how to deal with them too

morning all ,

to seriously answer your question, a monitored alarm as well as security cameras. In saying that, no system is foolproof. Almost all security cameras could be disabled by turning off the mains power to a house and even a monitored alarm would give a thief at good 15 minutes to grab what they wanted.

A heavy duty UPS and a computer with cameras that automatically upload images to a web site does it for me! ;-) Cut the power? See if I care! :)

Sounds good but all of this aside if they are pro and really want in nothing will stop them. Everything is only a deterrent

Rofl, If theives broke into our place, they would turn around and BRING us a truckload of stuff out of pity!! :D

Actually I have the best security free. Neighbours that put Mrs Mangles to shame. A leaf cant blow down my street without atleast three folk recording, its size/color, which way it went, what it did and having taken a photo of it! I kid you not!

I once had to explain to police why i was caught red handed half way through my own side window (locked myself out), They had been reported a suspicious man breaking in, never mind They have known me 10 yrs!

Lol inny we had the cops show up once when Luke was trying to open the windows that our moron landlady painted shut . It's good to know though that when someone drives past and sees a dude with a hammer and chisel at a window he does something about it

Ok so kids I wasn't really going for the whole dog thing lol...we have a Great Dane (gentle giants but if you don't know anything about dogs they're pretty intimidating - especially when they bark ). We were looking at a system for just under $2000 which has 4 cameras, a dvr (digital video recorder apparently ) and 15" lcd monitor. Apparently it would record about 2 weeks worth of stuff before it would start taping over or whatever the technical lingo is lol. Was wondering what people thought about it...it's self install too apparently.

Sounds good to me, although the self install bit would scare me off as I cannot even work my VCR :( Do you insure your herps, and would a security system like that reduce your premium??

Lol you're a dork :D ;)

I wasn't aware you could insure your herps? I know there's been a few threads on here in the past and I thought people basically said it wasn't possible . Do you insure yours? Lol ;)

I believe you can insure herps, but I dont. I like to live on the edge and consider myself an XTreme herper  Chat to "Reptililililian" I think she said she was talking to someone about livestock insurence?

I thought the conclusion was that you weren't able to insure reptiles only cats, dogs etc ? I would be interested to know.

I have quite a few locks on all my doors, security screens and an electronic security system, i wont go into details though.

Reptile girl you sound like one of those neighbours everyone hates because they cant train their dog not too bark when it isnt necessary. Man I hate little dogs, lol.

"Reptilililililililian"? Sometimes you just take tings that one step too far Olivehydra!

Im with inny on this one, neighbours are the best deterent, everyone around here knows everyone, someone out of place gets sussed in no time. Trouble is you cant pass wind with out the town knowing the exact decibles and aroama.
