Going off head size is easier with very old animals, ie, wild ones that are probably over 10 years or so. I would have to say, I have never been able to see hemipenal bulges in a bluetongue either. I have a three year old that really puzzles me. One day, I threw in my Shingles with it whilst I was cleaning their enclosure, the bluey went straight at the male shingle, so I thought "Oh, it must be a male" I got the male shingle out straight away, but then the bluey went at both the female shingles, then I thought "Oh, it's may not be a male, it's just a ##### of a bluey!"
