You are not the first to learn this lesson. Once you have found a good supplier stick with them.
My guy is great....
"Yeah that is not a problem.... If I am not home I will leave the cut glass wrapped up in the car port... just shove the money under the door if you do not mind" - and that was the first time I purchased glass from him. He rolled up just as I was pulling away. Now I only ring the one place when ordering my glass ;-)
While you are shopping around remember to compare the Herp Shop prices with others you get. For the most part you will find them the cheapest or very close to it. If you have to factor in shipping, because Brian ships by Australia Post at cost I suspect you will always end up in front.
Yeah I know I just saved $20 buying 2 thermostats from Herp Trader then from local place and thats after postage & packaging and the $2.50 for the money order to pay the invoice. 1/5th of the total price isn't too shabby.
Have you tried asking them for off cuts of glass then get them to cut it down. My local bloke does it for me, my last lot were 2x6mm at 6x2 and another 4mm at 2x2. Cut and polished edges for just a lazy $20
Who was the second quote from Dan. I normally use my local glass guy, works out about $40 to $50 a tank. That's for two glass panes for a sliding glass door setup as well, not for just one fixed pane.
Try Cains Glass in Penrith..... They used to be one of my customers when I works for a plastic company.... Speak to Sue, and tell her Matthew from Ex Mulford Plastics sent you.... She should give you a good price !!
first was a castlehill outfit, 2nd is in sefton. whos your glass guy Daz? pm me?
p.s yeah, they did mention polishing (delux)!? plus finger grooves but that was even more !
If anyone makes their own light cages, dont use mousewire, its P*** weak, useless. Learnt that today, i was thinking finer guage to thwart my hatchy. should have gone with the next size up! live n learn, back to bunnings! :?
forgot to mention both quotes were for 6 mm, i thought that was standard, I was thinking of getting tracks from urs and they're 6mmnext time ill just buy a bank, im not cut for DIY lol
Ask your local glazier if he has second hand glass.Often they have lying about, I always had no problems getting it in the past. Often they replace shop front windows that have had damage and you usually can get or salvage few a good pieces from them. Just make sure it not the safety glass with the plastic stuff in the middle as it doesn't slide. (to thick for 6mm plastic track).
Just about to get some glass myself and the guy at the local glazier offered some huge bits of glass probably old windows but he said it's too old to be cut but it gave me a few ideas for a nice outdoor setup,he also polishes and cuts finger grooves for nothing and the tracks are just as cheap as anywhere else and it's local.
Now to get in touch with my tree lopper mate for some nice natural branches and hollow logs...i would prefer to make my own enclosures with some help as i don't like most of the commercial ones available and the ones i like are ridiculously expensive. You also learn from mistakes for future cages,i reckon it's good fun building your own

I have that told to me before also (glass is too old to cut). But I insisted and it cut okay. I just said I am willing to take the risk as this particular glazier said he wouldn't guarantee that when he tried to cut it wouldn't break and he wouldn?t take responsibility. But because the glass cost me next to nothing I didn?t have much to lose. I have saved a few thousand dollars over the years by using second hand glass.
