I'm pretty new to carpets, this is my first time breeding. I got my first clutch and my female is doing great. My worry is my male diamond/jungle.
Two months ago he ate a medium chicken and about a week after he had diarrhea.
Fast forward to now he still is having diarrhea, refuses to eat and has lost weight.
I'm thinking he has coccidia, from a live chicken fed by a previous owner. Since the symptoms fit. We are a little weary about taking him to the local Reptile vet because of what happened with the last snake 6 months ago (she had cancer) but they force fed her and when we got her home, 15 min drive. She died!!
I just ordered Albon to treat him.
Just wanted some imput on if anyone else had breeding males do this? (His poo is mostly urates and liquidy watery stuff)
And any experience with Albon? I've read its fairly safe but would love some imput on what to do!!

Is that something to worry about? My coastal only ever dispels liquid and white ureates unless it is after a big meal.
At most it would do a big brown one probably twice in a month...roughly.
I thought that was normal?

chickens always make the poop sloppy.... Once they are used to them it gets a bit better, but not much.
not surprising for snakes to go off food this time of year

I wouldn't be concerned if he hadn't lost 200grams in a month. And I always weight empty :/
And this isn't Normal poos for him.
He had awful stinky diarrhea after the chicken.
And now its watery, urates and a little runny poo.
I had read chickens can do that but for this long?
He's had chicks before and this didn't happen. Although he's on f/t rats we give chicks as an occasional treat.

i know youve already said you dont trust ur local herp vet, but the best plan of action would be to at least get a fecal smear done to find out what nasties are really in the poo before administering anything.
id be worried with the weight loss too.

i lost a snake to cancer last year too, teh vet had put him on fortum because his symptoms appeared to be those of RI, 10 days later he was dead and the necropsy showed he was riddled with cancer. i havent lost faith in my vet because of that, i still think hes an amazing vet!

Yea. They had her on baytril for an RI. I took her in for a follow up. And they force fed her and she died 15 min later. We had X-rays done and could visibly see the tumors :( .
I'm getting a fecal test kit and am going to start running fecals on all my snakes. Just to be sure...
I've done a lot of research and coccidia seems the most likely cause. Esp. Since I found out about the farm raised chick that had been fed to him.
That and breeding stress. I've moved him upstairs where it is warmer ( one. Solution for resolving diarrhea ) and away from his girls.
I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this with their breeding males?

Hi, I posted this awhile ago and thought I'd post an update about my male. I treated him with Panacur and then waited for the diarrhea to clear up, it did almost instantly and a couple of weeks ago he ate a chick. He seem to be doing great now.
I now know to do fecals on snakes new to the collection.

Thanks for the update.

Sounds like you have had a positive outcome with some learnings thrown in Always good to hear the outcomes of peoples issues that arise.

Glad to hear it all turned out well!
