bubs has (and has had even since before we got him) a small area of maybe 5-6 scales long on his belly that looks like it was split at one point ie: instead of it being 1 scale across his belly it looks like there's 2.
he's never been bothered by it and it doesn't even look like a scar or anything...just like i said, like there's 2 scales instead of 1 in each row.
anyone heard of this sorta thing before? he's a 4 1/2 month old diamond
thanx guys

It?s called a cleft, which is only a little birth defect.
Nothing to worry about.

Yup, that's where the umbilical cord was joined to the egg.

I didn't even notice it until I got a bigger baby, that is to say I noticed it quickly on the Olive, but never noticed it on my baby Mac...

Few sheds and it will dissapear, nothing to be alarmed about... :)

If it is a cleft, which is what I think it is from the description by Zoe, it wont ever go away I don?t think.
It is basically like a hare lip on humans.
My little M D has it too.
Still nothing to worry.

I've not heard of a cleft before, I'm just talking about the little opening where they were attached to their egg... this closes up and fades a little more each time they shed, well Clarices has anyway...

Can you tell me more about 'clefts' Artie?

HI Nicole, I stuffed up with my description of cleft before,
It?s not a lisp< I meant hare lip.
I rectified it since; don?t know how I mixed that up, must be my german translation he he
But that?s what it is anyway.
Cleft scutes, is where the scutes in the snake failed to fuse in the last stage of development.

Arhh, that makes more sense, I didn't understand that lisp bit at all...
But it never fades?

I'm still curious to know if we are talking about the same thing, Clarice had a little 'split' line, but it fades more each time she sheds. I'd grab the camera to take a pick of what's left of it, but she ate about 3 hours ago, so I won't bug her picking her up and turning her upside down for pictures for a few days...

Can you get a picture of yours Artie?

Nicole and Zoe, if you have the book ?what?s wrong with my Snake?, on page 90 is a picture of cleft scutes.

Sorry Artie, I don't have that book... but have always meant to look into getting it..

Can anyone else point me toward a pic or more information?

Paul, if you see this, can you respond... I remember you first explaining the little split to me, is that 'spilt' and the 'cleft' the same thing...

bugger i don't have that book either...
the vet told me to gently move each side up and down to see if they separate and they don't so that's a good thing

It is a worthwhile book to get ladies :) And cheap too if I remember right you can get it for under 20 bucks from the herp shop :)

Yeah it is MrFishMan but I only brought it for the articles

cheers M.......

Hi Nicole, I scanned the picture in the book, but unfortunately failed in all my attempts to upload it on to my post.
Sorry!!
