Sorry - HAD TO DO IT! :D

Here we go again! Steve Irwin's racking up the exposure yet again! Good or Bad? Any exposure is good exposure according to Steve Irwin. But does it start to divide and turn away some of his diehard fans when they find it hard to constantly justify his seemingly constant foolishness?

To a degree, I?m not surprised the Australian Antarctic division has jumped so heavily on Irwin, as there wouldn?t be a hell of a lot of things happening there usually (sorry! I had to draw the cartoon ? it sprang to mind immediately!). Apparently Steve had applied for the necessary papers to do the documentary but according to some dodgy report, he was claimed to have been sitting on a whale ? even I find that hard to believe!

I guess also when you're dealing with animals like leopard seals, the laws are there to keep people safe as well. In reality though, if you are anything like Steve Irwin a leopard seal isn't such a big deal!

I like him! I reckon he's great for creating animal awareness & promoting environmental issues! But is his latest couple of tricks pushing the boundaries a little too far? Is his sourcing of new materials putting his shows before the animals or is he just a genuine nutcase who has his heart in the right place? I don't know!

Well I'm a big fan of Steve. I think he's great for Austrlaian fauna awareness and wildlife in general.....but....I saw him on the news last night and he was saying something like:

"This is what happens when you become the greatest wildlife warrior to walk the earth - people want to cut you down"...thats close to verbatim I think.

Now that is taking it all a bit far I think.

I reckon he just needs to lie low for a while

Sorry - I don't feel very strongly about him, one way or the other, although I guess I lean a bit towards the "he knows a lot about herps but he's a wanker" group. However, after seeing the story on A Current Affair, it was pretty obvious that he was sitting on a lump of ice, not a whale!

Yet another beatup by the press, in my humble opinion.

From the tele today

 Lol moosey, luv that drawing, poor Barry, looks like a guy I saw at a railway station recently!

He needs to be taught he isn't the greatest Wildlife Warrior in the world. He needs to be taught that he is an Australian citizen bound by Australian law and if that Law says you can't interact with the wildlife of the Antarctic then DON'T INTERACT WITH IT. He is not above the law.

Greg.

Maybe not the Greatest - but certainly one of the Richest! Could it be a case of 'Tall Poppy Syndrome' that is bringing more attention to him??

I agree with Greg though, that's the law and Irwin should know better! The lure of cheap promotional stunts will one day land him in a pond, with more crocs hungry for a piece of him than he'll know what to do with! LOL

i think he is great but the media put there bit into it to make it sound really bad. i dont think he should have done it as greg says he is not above the law, but i am a fan of him.

Imo i think that he is a good ausi icon which brings alot of revenue in for australia. his ideas and views for the most part don't do any harm. Good on u Steve!!! oh and the press are a bunch of wankers(imo). if thay didn't "expand" on the truth who would watch their shows?

Pete.

he was a good aussie icon once, now even the americans who come through my work think he is a big knob.i know a guy who was charged for repositioning a gtp in the wild for a photo.steve upsets every animal he touches.SO HE IS APARENTLY ABOVE THE LAW.

obee

to learn more abt these animals we need to get close and watch them in the wild. he should of got some sort or permission first to approach the animals, although with his experience i doubt he would of put the whales in danger. sometimes mistakes happen though!

I agree with Obee. I have been charged in QLD for holding a wild reptile for a picture. And I know of three zoo keepers who were fined for moving GTP's at Iron Range for pic's. Also, quite a few people have been booked for getting to close to whales here in NSW.

Why then is Steve Irwin above the law. NO ONE should be. He interfers with wild creatures in nearly every show and never has a problem with authorities. I once spoke to Steve regarding the issue of him interferring with wildlife for his shows, and his reply was he didnt care as he was too big to touch.

Sad that we need to have these laws.
Even sadder when they need to be enforced.

when you and these other people were fined were you granted permision to film in the national park in question?

Without permission you cant even film in the botanical gardens, let alone a national park.

I would say with alot of what is done in docos is allowed because they have applied for and recieved permission prior to the shoot.

I wasnt fined for taking a picture in a National Park. In fact, I was on private property.

As for Steve, when I spoke to him regarding this subject years ago, he told me they had no permits to photo wildlife. I did however hear on the news last night that he had a permit to film the wildlife in Antartica. The issue here is did he go beyond the boundries of the permit which was to just film the wildlife, by interacting with it

Certainly is the question I think. How's this for an angle!! - I'm wondering whether or not he's looked at all the loop-holes associated with it -weighed up the measure of the cons as opposed to the vast media coverage this would attract, then thought it would be cheaper to fight the charges in an untested court and come out trumps! - what do you reckon? A bit far fetched! but by god I love a conspiracy theory! :D

On a serious note; his Australia Zoo speaks volumes about the man - it's a real credit to him.

Just a point of intrest, apart from being in the water, albeit on a berg and sledding with penguins, did he really do much more than say David attenborough would have doing the same kind of doco?
i think his hearts in the right place but his head is getting in the way. "greatest wildlife warrier to walk the planet" pffft! get a grip crikey!
