Browns,- Get your bum up here asap, I stock piled orange medic when I new it was going out of production. Ill give you some.It is the best thing to use if used correctly, one aplication kills mite and eggs period. Ive NEVER had a prob with it and have used it on pythons, copperheads, adders, tigers etc all juvs with no ill effects.
Everything that arrives regardless of who and where the animals came from gets treated the moment they arrive, this should be standard procedure, period. I cant even remember the last time I had mite it was that long ago.
Rob
Rob i'll be up as soon as i can just won't be able to stay too long got things to do and thanks for the offer of o/medic it'll come in really handy in the future i know.I used the old o/medic many times and it was great stuff but i had no idea it killed mites and eggs in one go and no need for futher treatment.I guess that's great as i used o/medic plus and sprayed evry cage throughly without the nakes in and should have done the job then and may be less work for me.Would they now be gone seeing all cages have been treated the same?I wish i'd have known the o/medic was going to stop being made as i'd have grabbed a heap too.

Someone has mentioned another substance called pemoxin or something like that which sounds more like an antibiotic to me but apparently cheap and efficient does anyone know anymore aboth this gear?

As i've said and Rob ,treat every animal as though it has mites that is new to your collection and you shouldn't have any problems and be careful with other herps that may visit!!

i agree with you guys that if you buy somthing from a member you trust them more.

i agree...set up some sort of trading feedback system, just give people the choice wether or not they are willing to have one about themselves

Ive heard good and bad reports about permoxin, I havent used it as yet so cant accuratly coment on it. Be really carefull with that o-medic plus as tea tree oil is very toxic to herps, infact its toxic to a lot of things, very dangerous stuff and in my opinion should be kept well away from herps.
Rob

danw,- sorry, yes lizards get mite much the same as snakes and same as snakes some species get deversated by them whereas others handle them fairly well.
Rob

I quarantined for 3 months and used predator mites from SA biological services.

hi nome,
any chance of putting a contact number or web site so we can check it out, i have my bluey's outdoors and like to treat them every 6 months, but it's only with a spray that doesn't get into the ground, these sound like a better way of treating outdoor pits,

cheers,
steve........

pitty you can just give them a bath with some cleaner shrimp or a cleaner wrasse! very efficient parisite removalists! course cleaner shrimp cost like $100 each in aus...

why did this orange medic stuff stop being produced if it was so good?

andrew

I agree on the tea tree oil in o/medic plus Rob and was very careful and thorough ...i sprayed corners well and scrubbed the cages well then washed and wiped down again with diluted bleach which i did several times to also get the cages as clean as possible removing the slightest speck so i can see if anymore do pop up....this is much the same as pest strips and is not recommended to use unless aware of the risks...predatormites do sound good but o/medic i liked best and TOD but tod is exy and needs several applications to break the mites life cycle!

Mongrel things they are

they stopped making orange medic because they started a new one with tea tree oil in it that can't be used on reptiles.

you would have thought they would be keen to keep the non teatree oil one still going due to its popularity among herpers.

Orange medic is a head lice treatment and I guess most people that bought it preferred the orange medic plus, as tea tree oil knocks over headlice better.

The herpers would have made up only a very small percentage of those who bought it.

I never liked it because of all the horror stories about it killing reptiles. Most of these were because of people not diluting it enough, but it always scared me because of that. I stuck with TOD for new reptiles and hypoasis mites for lizards I bought that had mites.

The same thing happened to me, its so disheartening. Even though its something that can be fixed, its the extra work, that you didnt count on, plus the poor reptile, who doesnt need the extra stress, especially moving to a new home. Then theres the thought in the back of your mind, are they going to sell the enclousures to rather than go through the treatment process, to some unsuspecting person...

I also wanted to do the right thing by the person by not saying who they were, heaven knows why, but you do feel bad exposing them, even when you've done nothing wrong.

Then I came up with the notion, that the reptile is now in a caring new home with myself, it will be treated and well looked after from this point on, this made me forget about my anger and get on with it.

Also if you want to call someone with no caller id dial 1831 infront of the number....
