Ahhh yeah it hurts to feed my animals  Rabbit - grass and carrots etc $2 a fortnight or thereabouts and $3 a fortnight for the snake

Grand total: $5 a fortnight

J/k I know what you're saying  I'd love a collection that was as big as that!

To help keep the 'The cost of lovin your pets' down, Brian from the HerpShop sells his roaches by weight and not by quantity. The buyer then gets what he /she is actually paying for. As a suggestion (if anyone wants to take the time to do it) actually count the number of roaches you purchased and see if it tallies, you may be surprised.

The HerpShop roaches are packaged free of waste/soil, so the weight is the actual weight of roaches and nothing else.. therefore the consumer/buyer gets what he/she pays for. :D

I have mine on heat cord ether, thin layer of carbourd between, because heatcord (15watt) gets to 35c. Apparently 30c is optimal for breeding.

Geckodan, i use a reg ol mozziezapper with a bag beneath, slim pickins lately on cold nights, but warm nights catches heaps moths etc, my frogs and beardies and ewd love em! some get fried though, these i toss in with turts and either they or fish eat em. Im going to see if i can disable the zap bit just leaving the light. :)

The bug inn is designed with an exhaust fan that sucks them in a little container at the back. You are supposed to spray the container with surface spray to kill those dreaded bugs but it works much better with the bugs alive. When you remove the container in the morning pop it in the fridge for 5 minutes, the moths etc stop wiggling and you can put them in the enclosure to warm back up again. The phone number is o755305167 or email [email protected] .

I get enough moths from my dunny light. My youngest insists it stays on all night. I can handle picking up a moth, it's the crix and roaches, I dunno why, they just creep me out. Maybe it's time to breed my own and get the boys to feed the animals, lol.
So all I need is a tub, heat cord, grass clippings and feed em scraps? Don't the crawl up the sides of the tubs?

with woodies in qld you prolly wont even need a heat cord. just have 2 tubs (2 colonies) with egg cartons, toilet rolls etc in them. make sure you have a lid with fly screen in it for ventilation. Chuck in a carrot every now and then (I also use apples and broccoli stalks). Use one tub at a time, when the woodie numbers are gettin low, switch over to the other one. crix are a pain in the sphincter to breed so stick to woodies and youll be fine

Costs us about $80-$100 a week average, food for breeding rats and mice....buying in rats, mince, eggs, vedges, catfood, light globes, power....collect the bugs and roachs, and no vet bills etc included, to maintain our animals.....why do we do it?, because we enjoy it. One may say you do alright when you sell something, however all it means is new cages, building materials etc,.. maybe a few extra animals.....

yep about the same for me but in frozen rodents and i have no lizards so pretty straight forward, light globes here and there but i mainly use heat tape"no more replacing blowen bulbs",collect newspaper,go round like a madman catching house geckoes to scent rodents, clean up stinky mess, scraping white urates from the floors of enclosures only to have them crapped in again 20 minutes later"i'm sure they know" ahhhhh yes the joys of keeping reptiles now i remember hehehe i couldn't imagine breeding all my own rodents and having heaps of lizards as well.....it may cost extra in the long run but i prefer buying frozen.I could handle breeding woodies though, seems and looks very simple.

the cost of lovin your pets

Hi all.Shane here from shanesaussie_pythons or just aussie_pythons.Ive been watching the thread and thuaght id contribute.Without going into exact species.I keep a collection of 104 adult snakes and about 20 subadults and yearlings and have about 40 or so young left from last season. Now when you consider i breed about 85% of my own rodents used to help feed the collection witch saves me about $1000 a mounth. The cost of essentials everything from Power,Food,Vets,Medication,Cleaning agents, substraights,Light globes, and that is incandesants,Fluresents,Spot throwers and ceramics,Everything needed to run a healthy rodent collection as well, pluss everything needed to incubate and hatch each year,as well as a small amount of petrol used to aquire everything needed as well as distributeing young. And uniforms, biusness cards, and a small amount of advertiseing, and wages for an assistant one day a week.my anual costs to run a quality, healthy collection is around$25,000 a yearAnd this amount is with discounts for buying most things in bulk and doesnt take into acount any items needed to improve management of the collection such as stainless steel vet quality table scales or a larger freezer to store more rodents or a new fridge for medications witch are items not purchased every year or new breeding stock to improve the collection.now this breaks down to around $2,085.00 a mounth thats the cost of lovin my pets and the staffy and his costs havent been added yet and these costs grow every year with inflation regards SHANE from aussie_pythons

Not to bad Shane, I'm sure tax time takes care of you, lol.
Nobody answered my Q. Do woodies climb up n out of the tubs. I got the lid bit but you have to take the lid off at some point.

RE: the cost of lovin your pets

Yes they do, but you can put vasaline around the rim of the tub.

RE: the cost of lovin your pets

Ah, your a wuss Shaz :) , they're only woodies. I'll show ya it's done this morning :p

RE: the cost of lovin your pets

as far as i know you just put a good coating of fluon 6 inches deep around the top of the tub and you don't even need a lid...this is from what i've seen and works well.

Umm, every time that I asked Brian if he was supplying again - he said no. Mind you, I gave up asking about a month ago (that was after a few months of being knocked back.)
I have found that there seems to be a nation wide issue with these lil critters - no where's selling them ATM. I also have a Pisces account and they're not selling either...
Anyone have any other suppliers that they would like to recommend??
Bex
