Congratulations Tim, finally someone has bought a range on decent thermostats to Australia. Microclimate were the first thermostats to have proportional dimming thermostats. They are also made for Australian voltage and are not just adapted for our current as are the ones from the USA. Thereby being by far the more reliable.
I would recommend these to anyone who seriously wants to breed there reptiles. With the magic eye, your reptiles are treated to as close as possible to a natual light period. I have been using a similar type for years.
Proportional thermostats do not turn on/off like a standard thermostat. They actually check the temp at the probe every few seconds and adjust the power to your heating device.
Because most of the time you bulbs are running at less then full power, you actually extend the life of the bulbs 10 fold. You also get a huge drop in power bills. Plus you animals are kept at a constant temp. This also reduces stress to your animals by not having lights flicking on and off.
With the added photo cell you can have a automatic daytime/nighttime setting. As the days get natually longer or shorter, so to your cages. I have been using these with a USA brand for years. Its probablyone oif the main reasons I breed so much each year. Its as close to nature as you can get it.
I only use reflector globes in my cages. During the day time cycle, they start off at full power like the sun rising. As the cage approaches set temp the bulb is just dimmed down.. On a hot day they just turn right off.
When the sun sets, the photo cell tells the thermostat it is now night. It then switches to the night time cycle and all lights are turned off. Your night time temperature setting is lower then your daytime natually, so once the lights turn off they will not turn back on till the night time temp setting has been reached.
On a warm night, the lights stay off all night, but in cold weather like now, the night time drop may be reached in a few hours. When reached the lights are only turned on slightly to try and hold the cage at that temp. More power is applied if needed like on a freezing cold night, but they rarely have to go to full power at night.

Just to clarify it a bit for you.
If you buy a pulse proportional stat, these are to be used with all heat sources APART from Bulbs, so ceramic's, heat mats, power plates are good.
If you want to use bulbs where there is a visable light source in the viv, then you will need the Dimmerstat type, which can also be used with all other heat sources.

Neil, very correct. The pulse proportional models are for use of heating devices like heat panels, heat pads and heating cords. If used on a light bulb it will blow them. But for controling heater these are fantastic.
The dimmer type are for the light bulbs, but can also be used on the heating elements. If purchasing these great thermostats, be sure to tell Tim at URS what you need it for so he can advise you the correct model.
