With all the fires at the moment down here I thought I'd ask the question.

What is the recomended treatment for burnt reptiles?

Waiting for the ok to go up and look for injured wildlife around the fires that have been controlled and i haven't dealt with burnt reptiles before.

Depending on the severtiry of the burns as to whether they are superficial or deep burns, is depending on the treatment. Silvazine is a favourite of mine to use for burns. I generally clean the wounds with F10 to prevent infection. Sometimes Antibiotics are needed, and also pain relief. The reptiles must be well hydrated to as the burns generally ooze lots of of exudate, thus this can make them dehydrated. Nurtition is a must and so is PBT for healing. I find that if they are not eating, then tube feeding with 'Hills a/d' is the best way.

If you are keen to look for and treat injured wildlife, the best advice I can offer is to contact your local parks or vets and see if there is a wildlife group around that is doing something to help. I am sure that there would be. That way you will be getting advice from them on treatment since you have not treated burns before. Or contact the local vet and see what general first aid they recommend.

Burns can look not so severe but they can be very painful, so getting the right advice on the right way of treating each case is imperable IMO.

Good luck and for their sake, I hope you dont find many!

I have to agree with u there redbelly, I think there are many wildlife suffering. The vets are being overwhelmed with euthanasia's as there is just too many severe cases. The fires have been so devasting with their effect on every living thing, flora, fauna and human.

pythons73, if the burns are severe I would give pain relief with no questions asked. Generally, even though it is a wild animal and will be stressed in captivity, you can tell by their behaviour if they are in pain. If the wounds are inflammed, then there will be some degree of pain, so that is another indication. Lethargy, inappetence and also 'sulking' are some other indicators of pain.

Thank you very much for the advice....

Is Silvazinea perscription cream?

I've been told a 10 to 20 min soaking in a solution of tepid water and Betadine is good for rehydration?
Is it correct to say Antibiotics should be used on blistered or severe wounds, apparently reptiles are susceptable to infection?
One last question...What would you use for pain relief?
