Hello all.
I intent to study at the University of Queensland's Gatton campus doing a BVSc. The only thing is that I left school in grade 11 (stupidly) and therefore don't have a grade twelve certificate, however I am doing a Certificate 4 in Adult Tertiary Preparation at Tafe. That's generally grade 11&12 mashed into one year.
Can anyone shed some light (if anyone has any idea how this uni stuff works) to what my best option is to get into University? I cannot go back to high school as I was too close to being expelled and doubt they would allow me back in (don't flame over this.)
I had a look at QTAC's STAT test page and I'm pretty sure I have to complete 5 subjects through TAFE's ATP course to be eligable to apply.
At the moment I'm only doing two, so I don't know :S This is way too confusing.
Can anyone help me understand this ****? Anyone been in this situation before? -.-

Sorry, can't help you too much, except that I believe UQ vet sci requires a year 12 level of physics, english, maths B and chemistry... JCU (where I study) only requires the english, maths B and chem :)

Yes I have been told that by UQ but the person I spoke with on the phone said I could do applied science in widlife & take those subject courses (chem etc) and then if my score is good enough I could upgrade to BVSc. I have no idea :S :(

That would sound like the best bet. I had planned on doing Applied Science if I couldn't get straight into vet, and was going to try and transfer across to BVSc. Sorry but I can't really help with the tafe, never looked into it.

Goodluck with it, its a great course :)

Hahah. It's so bloody confusing! How will I manage University if I can't even work out how to get into it ! :p Too bad NO University's on the Gold Coast do BVSc, I have to go to bloody Gatton which means I have to move in with my Auntie & still drive an extra half hour each day :x Maybe tomorrow I will have a chat with someone at the TAFE & see if they can help me out... I'm worried I will fail chem, maths & physics as I've never done any of them! Except maths but I hardly ever went to class and only did maths A. Gah

just going off what i know in victoria (although it is different state to state)get onto QTAC,, are you cutting it fine?... im in victoria so going through VTAC and all our dates have just closed. what you need to do is follow your QTAC quide, pick out the course you wish to do and look closely at the requirements not just current year 12 because you might come under that, since you didnt do year 12 can you even do a Bachelor of Veterinary Science without the required subjects? usually its not the completion of year 12 its the subjects you do... you could always try ringing the unis and have you gone down to any open days? sorry if im wrong.

yeh im pretty sure ui have to complete the required subjects through university, there goes another year of part tme school & work  i think i need to sit down with tafe & talk to people from qtac/uni and work all this out. soon. thanks anyway. oh and no i havent been to any open days as the uni i intend to do the BVSc at is 2 hours away

That's what I plan to do in 2111. You're pretty stuck with options...not to mention that BVSc. was an OP1 course (when I was in year 12). Not quite sure what it is now??

My best advice is actually ring up and make appointments with some of the career advisers within the universities. They maybe able to shed some light on the subject. If you can get into a course at university, there is always the option of "bridging".

Never fear though, there's always a way...you just have to suss it out.

Settle

The other thing...go to Career Advice nights that Universities hold all the time!!! They'll be able to shed some light on the subjects.

I have made an appointment with my tafe career advisor.. that's a start :) yeah I might have to bridge from applied science to BVSc. So confusing. Even if I did stay in school there's no way I would have got an OP1. Thanks everyone :)

Hey , one semester of a course in biol or chem at uni is usually equivalent to studying yr 11 & 12. Also I think you need to keep up a gpa of 5.8 to get into vet. There are lots of posts floating arount the Internet about alternative entry into vet if you can find them!

Call this number.... 07 54601276 and ask them about it.... Otherwise, if they can't give you an idea on how to go about it... Ask to speak to the Vet Tech Co-ordinator and they can probably help you choose the right path... OR ask ur tafe teacher on how to go about it or careers advisor thing... When I was there, they were in the midst of bringing the Vet Science over to the Gatton campus... Not sure if its complete or not yet? Use to have to go from St Lucia to Gatton and back again for half your subjects...

But yeh, I know a guy that is doing Vet Science, most of them who didnt get a high enough GPA got into BAppSci (Vet Tech) did that for a year and then transferred into Vet Science...

Btw, I'm pretty sure, you'd be fine to go back to school, especially if you show them that you are determined to get a higher education... Not to fight or cause crap... Get over the popularity rebellious stage, and go there coz you want to further your education etc, coz when you get to Uni, you are paying for it, and no one is going to care when you skip class and you WILL get kicked out if you cause crap etc... The lecturers really couldnt give the slightest if you rock up, do well or what, coz you are only wasting your own time and money if you are just there for the social life... No one cares there... You are there coz you want to learn, if you arent, you wont go well and you definately wont last... There isnt really any cliques or anything there, people will just look at you funny and think rich mummy and daddy have sent you etc if you show up in tight revealing tops and mini's hair flicking with heaps of make up etc LOL... Might get you somewhere in highschool, but it just gets you the nickname of "campus hussy" in uni... or something like that...

Hahaha how many different ways could I just say that? :? Oh well...
