I reckon a lot of people do use it, especially those with larger collections. Not very naturalistic looking but cheap and effective and easy to change. One issue sometimes experienced with newspaper is with the ink coming off and getting on the animals,especially those that like to burrow bewteen the stuff. Probably related to the quality of ink a given newspaper uses, as it only seems to happen with some. If this is a problem for you, use purchased butcher's paper for the top sheet and use only that with 'burrowers'.

How is the keelback?
Also I think you would find it virtually impossible to use paper(any forms) as a substrate for keelbacks, lol.
