hi guys i have just recently purchased a breeding tank to house my 5 month old cooke town blond spotted python i am having trouble keeping my heat to suitable temperature of 30 - 34 celcius. i have the 7w heat mat under the tank and use a microclimate ministat 100 the thermostat is almost turned right up i have the probe sitting in the tank toward the middle.

is there something i am doing wrong is there anyway i can get the heat u???

thanks guys

I'm no expert, but a 7W heat mat doesn't sound like very much to me...

What size is your breeding tank and what material is it made out of. 7 watt heat mat isn't very high heat but it depends on what size and type you are trying to warm. plus a heat mat will only heat the area above it not heat the whole enclosure.

I read the title of this post and thought you were looking for a blonde from cook town...that you had met........

yes i know...i was having a blonde moment lol

7 watt heat matt should be ok for a small click clack/tub, but not sufficient to heat anything bigger. What are the temps like right over on the hot side of the tank, directly under the heat matt?

i have a small plastic breeding tank, temps on the hot side drop at night because being so cold but during the day it stays above thirty but does take some time to heat up to those temps. my cooke town blonde (rosie) seems fine with it but still worried about stressing her out. but she seems fine..

I have all my younger snakes (5-10 months) on 10 watt heat mats.

It is hard for your thermostat to gauge the temperature in the tank since you are just running a heat mat, like cwtiger said. As long as your snake is sitting on the mat, he/she will be fine.

Heat mats should never be used if you want to heat the air in the tank (which is why you'd have the thermostat probe in the middle). How big is the tank itself? A five months old, a spotted is still very young to be putting into a larger tank (Im assuming it's large/ish due to the term "breeding tank"? Correct me if Im wrong).

Do you have a thermometer to check the actual temperature just above the heat mat?

the trouble is your wattage, 7 watts is way to small for winter some people recommend 10 watts i recommend 14 watts or higher

well the tank i have is 25cm L x 15cm W i have a flexible lucky reptile 7 watt heat mat. yes the thermometer reads above thirty during the day. maybe a bigger heat mat would be sufficient. apparently the heat mat i have is not very well known and no one around my area has made purchases of them. but cant blame the brand.. my blonde alternates she sits above the heat mat most the time but she moves to the cool side when she wants (alternating body temps). but yeah..

i wouldnt house my snake in a glass tank...they are very cold because of the glass and very difficult to keep warm.....not the best choice of enclosure for a snake

Am I missing something here? Can't find any reference to a glass tank? Alex if she is thermoregulating I wouldn't be to concerned.

yeah temps only get lower at night and maybe i will purchase a better well known heat mat. she seems fine eating well and handling awesomly so i am slowly learning not to stress to much about it..
