Then on the other hand we have the sicko's who leave their millions to their pet poodle and starve their kids. IMO you need a license for both, including demerit points for bad behaviour!

I agree with licenses for all animals - I think rodents like rats & rabbits & ferrets etc might be a bit over the top though, but here are the ones we should seriously be looking to contain, as they are generally the ones people get bored with. They start off small & cute & then turn out to be more work than they know what to do with! So guess what? - they let em go!

The trouble is imagine sending in the report each year for your snakes diet if you bred your own rabbits & rats etc, not to mention selling them to other snake keepers! They wouldn't know if it was for food, how many you bred or even if one had escaped! The next thing they'll require is for you to keep the snake stools, only to have pay some chemist, via more fees from the keeper, to poke through those stools & add up it's diet! It's beauocracy gone mad! ..oh.. and perhaps I've had a few too many beers & my imagination is in overdrive.....sorry all! :D   :D

Ok Zoe. I give up. Only rich people should have rights. Money is the passport to everything. poor people who dont have the money for any possible emergency should be executed now for being parasites and a drain on the finances of the well to do.
Hang on. You dont have the emergency money if all your animals get sick at once. Give them up now before its to late. You made your point and I think less of you for it. (not really)

geez man dont get ya knickers in a knot  . i luv how everyone ignores the part where i said i know a lot of people who dont have a lot of money that take VERY good care of their pets. maybe read the whole thing? or read it twice...

ME!!! lol

if this was a snake licencing issue everyone would be for the licences wouldnt they? whats the difference between some twat not knowing how to take care of a snake and some twat not knowing how to take care of their cat or dog? i understand some of you hate cats and dogs but it shouldnt mean its ok for them to suffer. anyone who has ANY pet should care about the welfare of ALL animals i say. i am sh*t scared of spiders but i dont kill them or get anyone else to. if some dick was feeding their snake roaches or something you would all say they shouldnt be able to keep snakes. in my eyes thats the same as some guy not realising that his dog is underweight when you can see its spine and ribs :?. i'm not trying to pick on anyone i'm just trying to get yaz to understand why i think its a good idea to make people get licences before they can own any animal. so stop jumping down my throat lol. ;)

Maybe I fell asleep trying.   :D
Knickers to you. As we were poor I never learnt to read. Had to go to work from the age of 3 to pay our vet bills. It was hard enough just learning to write.

cool peter. you PAID you vet bills even though you didnt have the money. you TOOK your pet to the vet. you deserve to keep animals. therefore you are NOT the type of person i'm talking about. get it yet? ;)

Zo? makes a really good point, and working at a vet I think she would see the effects of bad owners more than we would out in the public.
I know alot of reptile owners don't like cats and dogs, but you really have to accept that people love their cats like we love our snakes and lizards.
And then there are the others that treat them badly, neglect them, or just don't know how to care for them properly.
I know we are not all rich, and some of us would not be able to afford to register our pets for $100 every year, but being aware of these costs would make people think more before they bought a new pet, so I think that is a brilliant idea.
I think another problem is the parents who won?t say no to the kids, even when they know that the new pet the child wants is just going to be a problem for the house hold?. And more than likely dumped or put down in a few years when it?s not ?cute? anymore.
That?s all I have to say.

Maybe a $100 fee for a licence is a good idea to stop people from neglecting pets? Could be tricky to inforce though ...
I pay $170 a year to keep reptiles theres nothing tricky about it you want the pet you pay the fee !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I believe its a good idea if I comprehend the whole legislation. If u get your animal desexed u dont pay a license fee? If thats true it is a one off fee for getting it desexed. Breeders can afford $100 a year as most pets sell for money. I dont really know how much desexing is but if u only want 1 pet dog and it lives for 10 years thats $1000 in license fees. Most cats and dogs that breed are unintentional and having them desexed will cut that down alot. So it should help in unwanted litters.
Cheers Stevo

Zoe is correct up to a point. Having a license may reduce the number of acts of neglect and cruelty to animals but there are already registration fees for dogs which already act the same way. And there are different rates for entire/desexed animals. IMHO this should also be extended to cats as well.
But just because people pay good money for an animal won't mean people will or can look after it. There seems to be a fundamental problem with selling animals at a size smaller than what they eventually grow to. Many people will by a puppy, kitten, EWD or Burmese python baby without considering how (or if they can) they will look after it when it is adult.
And another problem tis that peoples economic situation can change dramatically with little warning, the is a large car plant here that is in trouble, if that closes then many people will find things tough as will some of their pets.

we have them for cats too in vic fuscus but its only about $30 for a desexed dog and $20 for a cat a year and you're only allowed 2 of each on any property unless you declare yourself a cattery or kennel (not sure about the guidelines for this). the main problem with this is that half the people dont register their animals. you should HAVE to show your licence before you buy a cat or dog just like you do with a reptile. only being allowed 2 of each animal means you wont be paying $1000 a year for them all and maybe there could be discounted rates for multiple animals? just an idea.

But just because people pay good money for an animal won't mean people will or can look after it.

true, but i think most people would be more likely to take better care of a pet that they're spending more money on than something they got for free, just like most of us do with our reptiles...who's gonna treat a GTP badly lol...makes sense to me anyway ;).
