KERSTEN your correct the scales are differant from a taipan and the head isnt distinct from the body ITS AN EASTERN BROWN SNAKE!......:)

LOL I love these threads!!:lol::lol:

I wouldnt have a clue and i am happy to say it!!

No wait i think its a Taipan!!!!! Or second thoughts could be an Eastern Brown!!!

LOOK AT MY AVATAR..........ITS AN EASTERN BROWN SNAKE ..... what happened to it after you took the pics ?
I opened the screen door to get a better photo and it took off at speed under the corner of the fence and disappeared into one of the neighbours yards.

The neighbours on the other side of the fence in the photo have a few birds in cages in their back yard and I think mice might be attracted to the seed (I've seen them living under the neighbours pavement under the fence).

It might be time to get some mouse traps.

looks like you have one of the better mouse traps known to man right there

Even if they manage to get rid of the mice problem, the birds and water in the cages will attract the snakes still. Browns are hoovers, they'll eat just about anything they can swallow. If you're worried about them the best thing you can do is be observant when you're walking around your yard - especially as you walk in and out of the house. They'll be on the lookout for you and avoid you as much as they can, much like the one you've already met.

keep the comments coming i just got out the popcorn

haha very interesting i know nothing about snakes so can't comment only i wouldn't wan't him in my back yard

Eastern Brown just doesn't have the same ring to it... I can imagine some people here getting to the hospital, I was bitten by a Taipan, get away from me with that damn Eastern Brown Anti-venom. It was a Taipan I tells ya......

taipan or brown

if looking at the picture you notice the orange ring around the pupil, this is clear it is a taipan

wow, threads like this amaze me ! if you can't positively ID something, why make yourselves look stupid by guessing ?

I would be purchasing some new ID books then mate !!

OK open up A complete guide to reptiles of Australia by Steve Wilson and Gerry Swan to page number 427 and look at the picture of Oxyuranus scutellatus and tell yourself that it is not the same species of snake as on the start of this thread!

The problem with feild guides and ID books is you get one picture to use as referance for an entire species. (buying one does not automatically make the owner an expert on taxonomy.)
