Good old fashioned newspaper is all my boy has ever had. Costs nothing...we get the local ones free....I just tear them in half and give him a few layers so he can hide under them if he wants to...when he goes to the toilet, I just take them out, give the place a bit of a wipe and lay new ones.....eezie peezie

Yeah I always use paper towel and newspaper for hatchies. Mites in the kritters crumble in my opinion is harder to get rid of because the can hide in it etc...but i see your point. I use it for my shinglebacks and they love to dig around it it :)

I use newspaper for a number of reasons. 1) It's free 2) None gets stuck on food and ingested and best part 3) When it is dirtied, you're throwing the whole lot away. You're not leaving any mess behind like could be possible with spot cleaning. Only downside is yeah it's boring to look at lol.

I've just bought "Carefresh Pet Bedding" for my new BHP - it's "reclaimed pulp" and looks like the inside of your jean-pocket when you forgot to take out a bit of paper. It's soft and comes in a bunch of colours (though I just bought a $9.95 un-dyed pack). It says that the little pack will recover to 5 litres, which is plenty for my 15L click-clack. I feed in a separate container, so I don't need to worry about ingestion, though I think this is the stuff Snakeranch uses...

I use Kritters Crumble for my lizards but im not sure about using it foe snakes, because "if" you end up with mites then it would be extremely hard to get rid of the buggers, that's why i use newspaper and marine carpet mats. I have also heard that fake grass is bad for snakes due to the coarseness of it but i dunno...

Couldn't you just remove the snake, remove all of the substrate, thoroughly clean the enclosure, rid the snake of mites then there would not be any?

butchers paper or news paper for most things. Bhps are on grouted slate with a layer of euchi mulch. I would love to have some awsome substrate setups, but when you clean out a lot of cages, it's not viable. Only reason the bhp's are on mulch, is because they like to burrow and they destroy paper:D

4-6 weeks depending on the number of "messes" and the consistancy of them, I normally do a full change the week after feeding chicks or after a shed when mine seem to drink alot and then release it straight after they shed, but if you take your snake out on the grass to do its business would be able to get away 2-3 months I would imagine

I use fake grass one end and coarse sand at the other for my 2 spotteds and Bredli, the coastal and Murray darling just fake grass. I like the fake grass because I have 2 for each enclosure. When I clean the enclosure, I take out the fake grass, disinfect the enclosure then put in a fresh fake grass that already fits. Then I hang the dirty fake grass on the line and beat the sh.... poop out of it, hose it down and leave it in the sun to dry for a cuppla days.
Be careful using boat carpet as I have heard they treat it with ****-nick so it wont mould when wet all the time in a boat.
If you use kitty litter, definately nothing clay based, in case they ingest it.... clogs up the pooper

Newspaper. We used fake grass to begin with but it's way too much work to keep clean and I reckon my snakes enjoy reading the articles anyway.

Haha, I caught myself behaving most illogically and choosing an interesting article to put in my beardie's enclosure today.

Lol, yeah as I'm changing the papers I'll be chatting to them telling them that I'm putting these newspapers in for them to read. :p

You could start reading them stories, or articles.....they might like story time before night nights !!! My little bloke likes the car and sports pages....

Lol if there's ever reptile stories I'll make sure they're ontop!

Sugar cane mulch is the current choice. Its a bit dusty but in abundant supply up here. The hemp based products that were discussed in another thread look interesting.
