hey i have a diamond python 6 months old and its currently in an enclosure 60cm high by 50cm deep and 120cm long and is happy and everything is fine. but when my diamond gets to big im going to make him a new enclosure 100cm high by 60cm deep by 150cm long. i was wondering what is the best type of wood to make snake enclosures out of. and if possible can people show some pics of enclosures that they have built for snakes.

thanks
jake

Best type

Moisture resistant melamine is the best timber product in my opinion.

i have to get some pictures of my enclosures(and livestock) but do a search and you will find plenty on the net.

Basically, look at your kitchen, pantry, vanity unit or your mate's house and design up a size and colour, go see a carpenter or cabinet maker, he/she will be able to construct it for you, it should last 20 years as long as you don't trash it.

cheers

melamine if you have a tight budget, but a nice sealed timer would be perfect if you have some money to do it.

I've got one made of pine, stained and sesaled with a low odour waterbased sealant.

i am building some made from mdf and as im a spraypainter i will be spraying the whole frame in marin 2pak will do the job nice;y and gives me a wider colour range

Ply is the best i have used so far i strongly recomend it as it is strong and and very water resistent once painted two or three times. I recomend the twenty millthick sheets.

Have you considered an out door aviary ? You are in a diamond's home range I believe???

i use 12 mm ply to make a 2 bank cage each bank is 4 foot wide 2.5 foot deep and 3 foot high.. cost $650 to make included wiring, stain and 4mm glass.i have a few of them and find they are plenty big enough for an 8 foot carpet.

i was goin to get an outside avary cause yes im in their region but my mum is scared of them so their not allowed to be where she is so i have to build an enclsosure to go out in my shed

We have had experience with using plywood called "Palownia" which is a timber from indonesia which is lightweight. The sheets can be bought from some Plywood suppliers and is Marine Grade B-B grade. I recall a sheet at 12mm thick being about $75 for a 2400 x 1200mm sheet. The sheet weighs approximately 50% less than a standard 12mm Pine sheet. The finish on the wood is a creamy kind of colour, but this can be stained ofcourse.

I use pine wood, cladding and also solid pine, flooring is ply wood.

Stained

3 x clear coat to seal it.

In most cases avoid MDF, it is far less forgiving than particleboard, and very sensitive to moisture. any minute crack that water can enter will bugger the wood.

Jamie.
