G'day everyone.

Just wondering if anyone here is a Wildlife Carer/Rescuer?? or have previously been one?? My mum and I have recently joined our local wildlife group.. and last weekend we did a course on macropods (kangaroos, wallabies, etc).

I'm very interested in any stories about caring for joey's.. or about caring for any other animal too... birds, bats, reptiles, possums.... etc

We plan to one day care for anything and everything but we'll take it slow to start with... first we'll see what its like to have a joey hoppin around the house

everybody who cares for animals should sign up to local wildlife help organisations imo.the shelters are always calling for carers, you get to meet people in your area who you can exchange imfo and probably make some good friends to..we have had to deal with birds ,possums, koalas and seals,,seals are scary when you meet them for the first time,,give me a hot tiger before a seal any day

are you able to sign up just to care for certain animals? I love kangaroos, had two pet joeys on the farm when I was little but no room in my house for one of those at the moment, but probably able to squeeze in some amphibians, reptiles or smaller bird species.

Not really, you just take on the course as a general. You will cover all aspects of caring from birds to reptiles, only basic though. You can then go on specific courses for certain animal groups, such as reptiles, macropods, raptors etc etc.

It is really great, you get to work woth all different animals and learn heaps. :D

Ive got a few very ill day old chicks you could care for Hugster, maybe you could put them in a warm dark place!!

Just kidding mate, should explain, My baby wont touch her rats now since munchin out on a few chicks. Not your fault ofcourse, just havin a little dig. :D

I do reptiles now. Grew up in a family of carers and always had Roos and Joeys hanging off doorknobs all over the house. Don't have room here though and no outside areas to speak of, so it's all reptile rehab.

how old do you have to be to volunteer at wildlife shelters. i was a volunteer at the vancouver aquarium and i had lots of fun(mainly cause i got to see all the fish tanks every weekend  ). i went to some sortof ceminar or somthing at the melb zoo. learned basic wildlife rescue techniques. prefer to volunteer at a shelter though as it would give me good experience for what i want to do after school(work at zoo/aquarium caring for the animals, marine tanks or pythons, hell looking after birds of prey would be REALLY cool)

I can do you a wally, a grey, 3 possums, a sugar glider, a squirrel glider and a micro bat.
Please bring your own cages/pouches .... I'll leave the front light on

The VHS had a local carers group come in to sign up members to be called upon to look after reptiles during fires.

Trader and I signed up but nothing as yet seems to have come from it and that was over a year ago.

i used to do snake/ reptile rescue but got sick of parks and wild life hasseling around every time i had to renew my permit so dont now

Rach and I are with the Pilbara Wildlife Carers www.pwca.org.au

IMO if you want to specialise ( as we do with reptiles ) go for it. Not everyone likes hopping dogs, so if you want to help out, go with what your interested in as you will get more out of it than looking after sick / injured / orphaned animals you dont have an interest in.

I'm unsure about elsewhere but be prepared to put in your own money and time in doing this, alot of stuff is subsidised, but you may need to be payng for some things out of your own pocket.

Cheers, Jim

couldn't agree more. On both points. You'll find that a lot of the wildlife groups will help out with supplies but they are rarely ever free. Get to know your vets as they may be obliging at times with small but necessary gifts.

Whats the best way to find out about this in my area?

I live in newcastle and would love to get involved somehow.

anybody got any info about shelters willing to have a 16 year old volunteer near eltham(melb)

go to the link and join the Ozark list then ask people about groups in the Newcastle area.
There are several around there, Arc, Fauna, Wires. Another method would bhe to ring DEC(formerly NPWS) and ask who has licenses that cover your area.

Slackra, you could probably do tyhe same in Vic.
