i have a lovely little virus floating around in my registry that i can't seem to find.

so i am gonna bite the bullet and reformat (everything is backed up anyway, and i have wasted more time trying to find it than formatting takes...)

i just wanna know if its worth reinstalling XP, or should i upgrade to vista?

is vista any good? or is it another ?ME?

NOOOOO, dont do it! Vista sucks...... we call it windows fancy pants, it is the most annoying version of windows yet!

yeah my room mate is in it, he installed vista on our home network, and xp was reinstalled a week later, it has a few cool extra goodies, but i prefer xp, atleast untill service packs start coming out

Stay with XP for now not worth the trouble until a service pack comes out :p

The biggest issue with Vista at the moment is the incompatibility of a lot of software. Sure, the Microsoft programs like Office work, but I would say about 80% of other applications simply just don't work. I work in an IT department, and we are holding a Vista implementation off as long as possible.

The minimum people should wait to install Vista is after the first major service pack comes out - even then you should hold off until plenty of other people have tested it "in the wild".

Or you can do what I did and get a Mac!!! All the "new" features in Vista have been on the Mac operating system for about 2 and half years!!!

i like right clicking....

also being able to build repair upgrade is nice too...

---and piracy... but shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I'm certainly no expert - but in my non-expert semi geek opinion (and told by at least 45 students) do not upgrade... The digital rights thing is the worst - no point in upgrading - XP is full of problems, as is all wndows plantforms, but it is fine!

I like right-clicking too - and I do it all the time on my Mac. That is one of the keys - get a two-button mouse and it totally changes the way you use a Mac.

My PowerMac is totally upgradeable - I just put a heap of new RAM and a new hard drive in mine!!! Goes super-fast and I never have to worry about that little nasty virus you got Forensick...

Maaaaaate, what can I say?! Nothing, and I mean nothing, on my Mac (except the actual hardware) was well, hmmm, purchased, let's say. Got to love torrent sites!!!!;)

i tried to put vist office an vist in an my computer rejected so i just sold it to a freinad now he wants money back

I've used it for all of 5 min on a clients computer and thats exactly what I thought. Very annoying if you just want things to open and be done with it.

Stick with XP , got a mate who owns a PC shop and he has troubles all day with Vista compatibility issues .

Warning, very technical reading, may explode your brain...

with vista, you want a DECENT fast CPU, at LEAST 2 gigs of ram (but it's limited to 4 gig bah)
a DECENT video card (Ie $600 or more)

it's not as bad a some make it out to be, the way the OS is designed, is that it does get faster over time the more you use it, but at the moment there are too many problems with it for my liking (like I dont' want to spend $3k on a new mach just for an OS :p )

i dont see the point in buying any more after xp they just make more programs after plus if i was to upgrade my cuputer that much an spend 600 i wouldnt be able to do anything for 3 weeks apprentice chefs so arnt paid well

oh i wasn't planning on BUYING vista....
if i could be bothered paying for an OS i'd use linux and pay the few dollars to programmers that deserve it!

the digital rights was one of my concerns, i just figured some thoughtful hacker/programer would have turned it off by now.

oh well....
xp, again....

The Company building our AFTCRA website warned us against getting Vista! They said they have regretted it ever since installing Vista. We're sticking with XP

I recently bought a new work laptop and spent a great deal of time trying to find a deal that didn't involve me running Vista. I also have a flat policy across our computers at work that Vista is to be avoided.

Not sure whether the ISVs (independant software vendors) have sorted out upgrades but many security applications like antivirus/antispam were incompatible with Windows Vista. Vista also has a far greater overhead then Windows XP (uses more RAM and disk space).

I do not see any point in upgrading to Visa, I see the Aero interface (i.e. the one they've been advertising on TV) as a spectacular waste of system resources to achieve an infinitesimally small improvement in user interaction. I think it is yet another fine example of how the home PC market perpetuates itself through market hype generated by the software and lazy development creating products that have an ever increasing hardware requirement.

Sorry for the rant, but Windows Vista is the techie equivalent of an exotic hybrid infested with mites being sold at a pet shop with poor hygiene practices :)

As a rule ALWAYS avoid a new windows until at least SP1 or 2 is in. Just not worth the stress.
But at work we have both XP and vista on the machines, mind you only the "lesser important" use the big V, us developers have stuck with XP.
But if you do reinstall XP, as I just have, expect it to spend a couple of days doing progressive and annoying upgrades. When it does finish an upgrade it will then hassle you for a reboot every two minutes

yes, vista gets quicker over time, this also ties in with it using more RAM.

the reason is, vista caches up to almost all the RAM available (loads programs)
so that it doesn't have to load them when you run them.

it learns over time which programs you use at which times of day and then queues them to be loaded before you use them.

it also dynamically releases RAM when it's needed for the programs you're using.

this is mostly a good thing, but not always, because there will always be things loaded that vista THINKS you're going to use (or that Microsoft thinks you SHOULD use) of course they're going to favour their own crappy programs over others.. this is the part that really destroys the experience IMO... :(

SO.. a lot of stuff in vista is bad, some of it's potentially bad, some is ok and some is actually a good idea.. Personally, I won't be touching it till I'm dragged kicking and screaming into NEEDING it (several years I expect heh)
