Hi all, just wanted to ask something quick seeing as this is my first season of breeding / incubating eggs. They are port mac eggs, currently on day 34 of incubation @ 31.5 degrees. I went to check on them today and noticed one egg had a fuzzy white growth over it. Im assuming it was something from the vermiculite that had decided to sprout?

I wiped it off with damp paper towel and threw out some of the verm that was close to the egg and replaced with fresh stuff. Is this anything to worry about? If it starts again should I wipe it over with lemon juice?

Also what period is normal for them to start dimpling in, ive noticed a few have started to but humidity should be fine as their is slight condensation on the lid of the tub. Anyway heres photos, you can see the some of the ones starting to dimple, the white growth is kind of hard to see in the photos but its there. The other photo is just to show the dimpling better, 50% of the eggs are starting to do it.

its mould. get a ear cleaner (whatever there called) and wipe it all off.

Yep already done that, I cleaned it off yesterday / the day before whenever it was, and just checked again and it had all grown back.

So I cleaned it off with some lemon juice this time. Hopefully that stops it otherwise im going to be wiping it off every day to try and keep it at bay until they hatch. :(

perhaps gently move the egg to its own tub, and spoon out all the verm from the area.

Can't move it as the affected 1 / 2 eggs as they are all joined together, I dont really want to try and seperate them incase I tear one.

If it gets worse, do you think it might be worth the risk of possibly sacrificing one to ensure the safety of the rest?

Not sure, i've heard alot of people recommend to just leave them in a clump and they've had all the eggs hatch anyway. I dont want to harm one by trying to seperate it when it might very well be alright left where it is. I'll just keep wiping it every day and see how it goes for now. :)

As for the other Q when do the eggs generally start to dimple, should they be starting to already?

Thats what I thought aswell but as I said humidity appears to be fine so not sure whats causing that. :?

clean them daily?

i dont think you have any other options.

hey vixen I had one egg that looked like a golf ball litrally and survive better yet it was the only one that hatched. its not good that its the only one that hatched but at least one still survived. I may have lost the rest of the eggs to mould, too much moisture and high temps but mould and small flies where the main thing. and I left the mouldy one in the clump didn't matter how much whiping I did to try stop it the rest got infected and died. I ended up removing 8 dead eggs from the clump and when I did that the others started to go bad. I was left with 2 good eggs out of 24 layed at the end and still one of my good ones died days before it was ment to hatch. I oppened it out of the egg after it had dies and it didn't have an egg tooth it could of dround.

We had one start to do the same thing and just gave it a light rub over with lemon juice and had no further problems with it. Good luck with em.

I just had an idea, just seems funny the only egg doing it is the one with the cord sitting on it. Maybe the cord was collecting condensation and since it was sitting directly on the egg, caused the mold growth?

Ive moved it away now just incase.

Vixen, that's the reason why I like to keep my egg's off the vermiculite if I use it (I don't). Use something to seperate the eggs from the vermiculite. Like perlite or a shelf...

hey vixen , dont know anything about incubating so cant help there but i was gonna ask if you have any recent candling pics.?? :)
