Insects are heavily under rated as food in western countries.

Grasshoppers are good, as are crickets, mealworms... actually most are great. Woodies are terrible! If you're patient enough to fillet woodies, they're very good, although it's a lot of work and if you eat their digestive tracts you get the foul tasting stuff which is supposed to be a predator deterrent. It doesn't seem to work on animals too well, but sure works on me!

If anyone is interested in organising a get together for eating weird stuff, I'd be well and truly up for it, or I'll rise to the challenge of any eating contest, be it volume, time to eat a set volume, who can eat the hottest chilli, who will eat the grossest/weirdest etc :) Anyone up for it? I'm not sure how well I'd go, but it would be a heap of fun :)

Oh, by the way, the esters I made in Chemistry smelled like artificial apple flavour. I'd have tried some except that I'd probably have died or become seriously ill. Interesting that everyone seems to have made different flavours!

Now there is an idea for the next gathering in Melbourne.

I was watching a show last night with that Indian dude who threads small venemous snakes through his nose and out his mouth. Apparently he used to do it in tandem until one bit and evenomated him and he could not do it through that nostril.

Next up was a snake charmer who dug up many hundred baby cobras from a house. Not being being able to find a good home for them (so the story goes) he then proceeded to eat them alive.

(Trader left the room when the guy stuck the snake up his nostril and I changed the channel while the guy was munching on the cobras so she would come back into the room ;-) )

i am not up for eating cobras....or putting them up my nose....

but an eating comp sounds like fun!!!!!
might have to road trip it to melb...............

could to see that this stupid thread is still going lol :)

i don't usually eat weird stuff, had grubs before but that is about it. I do usually eat foods like yougart with salt and vinigar chips though, not everyone's cup of tea, but i like it :)

On the subject, i always used to eat dry cat food by the handful. It was kinda addictive, it didnt seem to have to many adverse affects lol...

I've eaten green ants.
Well, their abdomens anyway. Taste like a lemon / lime cross.
Was very tempted to try a grasshopper the other day, but there is so many diferent types... are any poisonous? What if they have benn munching on some oleander?
