Hello all,:)

I have been thinking about moniters, and I was wondering what was a good one to keep for a beginner. I want something that is not too big. What is one thats not too big though?:? I'd like a ackie, how big do they get? Also, if someone could give me a good caresheet fore moniters, that would be wonderful!:) Imformation like temps, enclosure sizes, [ for ackies ] food, etc.

Thanks,
Thomas.:D

Ive recently got a ackie myself, under the hotspot is 60 degrees, and 28 in the cool end.Im feeding mine small crickets atm.Ive got mine in a 4 foot by 2 foot fishtank with a pyramid made out of wood in the corner under the heat lamp,he can go to different levels, depending how much more heat he needs.I never knew they were so active, you can watch them for hours at a time.

I recently got an ackie. Its only a baby yet but I put my hand in his tank and he is getting use to me already. Doesn't really take any notice of me, yet, but not running away as much. I can pat him. Ackies are a small-medium sized goanna only growing to about 75cm from nose to tail tip. And consider that their tail is about half to two-thirds of their whole length.

Could you keep one in a 3ft long by 2ft tall by 2 ft deep reptile enclosure? At least for a little while? How big do ackies grow to?

Also apparently they get to around 60cm in total length, here is a couple of my little one....

its a shame u cant have somthing a little bigger. i recently got a spencers, and my god. i could spend hours laying on the reptile room floor watching her roam around her enclosure. so active and inquistive.
but if u going for a small one, then a ackie is the way to go.

Of all the small Monitors, my choice would be a Black Headed Monitor (freckled form).
They are a lot more stream lined than a ackie and only get around 70 to 80 cms.

A 3 foot enclosure would be fine for about 2 years if you got a hatchling.
Care is much like an Ackie, just supply a lot of hides, a very hot basking spot.
