Yeh, I'm thinking I'm going to get a Stimsons now. I was going to get a carpet but i like patterns on snakes. I think the Stimsons sounds like the best one overall. Does the pattern on the Children's fade away ?
yes

I AGREE WITH NO-TWO... children's are the best... ha...my BOI is placid as anything... only bit me first time wen i got him cuz he wasnt handled by his breeder....

the more they are handled the more they get accustomed to it... and that should generally lead to a placid nature...

and yes patterns on children's defo fade away... but still a beautiful snake ;-)

I can't decide lol. Maybe if I go to a breeder or pet shop and take a look at them. Or when I go to buy, i choose whichever i like the most there. (personality, looks, condition.) I wish I could get one of each but I don't think I'd be able to handle it as I've never owned a snake before.

My first snake was a Childrens Python and she is the most placid snake. Only time she bit me was when I waved a rat in front of her face and then replaced it with my hand, so totally my own fault.

Here's a couple of pics of her hanging out with me while I'm on APS.

Where abouts do you live? If you live in Brisbane, I recommend you go and see Simon at Everything Reptiles. He's fantastic to deal with and he'll happily answer all your questions. He also makes some fantastic custom made enclosures as well.

hey cheyenne
im getting my first snake too,
im going for the stimson
originally becasue it was the most placid, nice and small and wiht beautiful patterns

but the longer i look around this site the more im making myslef reptile crazy
there are so many i want now.

woah shes so pretty. how long can you have your snake out at each time ?

I only keep her out for about 40 mins but she hates going back into her enclosure. She will cling onto my thumb with her tail for dear life..lol

You shouldn't handle them for about 3-4 days after they've fed while they're digesting their meal. A great little book to get is 'Keeping Children's Pythons' by Greg Fyfe & Darren Green. It deals with all the small Antaresia's (Children's, Stimpson, Spotted, Pygmy) and gives some good, basic husbandry information.

Yeh i'm the same. I was going to go for the Children's, but now they all seem like great snakes. I want them all lol.

Oh okay, can you get that book from normal bookshops or do I need to go somewhere else ?

ha

ha mate ive got a spotted python i think ther great if u do get a small python
i think you should get a year old one because you wont have hasles feeding it
they cost about $300 for a yearling and $250 for a hatchling but a yearling is better
by far..
cheers:p

If you buy from a good breeder then they won't sell the animal unless they are feeding well.

I much prefer to buy a hatchling so I can let it grow under my care so I can learn and grow with it.

Thanks for that piece of advice. :) I was thinking of getting a hatchling though so my snake will know me from a young age.

Cheyenne, just be aware that they can ALL bite. Even the most placid of snakes, put them in a stressfull situation they can and will bite. Be aware of what stresses them, there can be quite a few reasons...ie handling Ttoo much esp when little, too much noise etc etc even though they can't hear they can feel vibrations, tv and music up load, high traffic areas of the house........when they are stresses they can stop eating (then you will really know what stress is) and can get snappy.

Get a Jungle :) The most beautiful snake in the world! Will be snappy when its young but will calm down and totally worth it. To be honest, all snakes are different. To stereotype them is impossible. You just need to talk to a breeder and pick one that is already placid or has already been handled. If you do happen to get a snappy one, don't fear. You will get great satisfaction in taming it :) And trust me when i say, a juvenile snake's bark is far worse than its bite!

Sounding like a pro now:lol:

I think just find some thing you like and go with it, yes some take a little more than others but with some help and time most come good.
