browns plains qld
Hey guys my coastal carpet has burnt some of his skin. after a feed he decided to go for a wonder around his enclosure and he went and started to wrap around the cage around the light. So when he got stuck he stated to panic. The light in the cage was a little close to the bottom of cage light. And the he burnt him self I rushed to help him and he burnt him self again. I feel really bad. The light was in the right cage Protector. And it still happened. He has reciently shedded and he still has the burn marks. What can I apply to his burns to help him heal. They are looking better tho. I will take some photos of the burns and post them up when I can.

This happened to us, but it was my stupid fault because I screwed a light protector on the wrong way and our snake managed to get in through a tiny gap :(

We took our snake to the vet, and had to give him antibiotic injections for 6 weeks. We also had to apply Silvazine Cream - this is only available on prescription, but I happened to have some at home. It's a human burn cream, but the vet said it was good to use on him.

Once it had started to heal, we just needed to put Vitamin E oil on his scars once a day. With each shed it has gradually gotten less noticeable :D

As long as there are no open wounds, you can get Vitamin E oil at the chemist, either in a little bottle, OR you could get the capsules and pierce them and use the oil out of them.

Silverzine cream is excellent and just as good is 'colloidal silver' from health food store and some pharmacy's carry it, it comes with all the info on the product. Its is a liquidd form of strong anitbacterial killer. Very safe to use and ingest. Spray that on it as much as you can 3x a day. Even put a little in his water to drink. Magic for burns, but just be sure that infection isnt happening, then you may want to seek medical advice from a vet, he may need antibiotics.
The shed that he did is very common when they burn, its from shock. So keep him quiet and maybe even cover the enclosure. Be sure to fix ur light and protector asap!

just a quick update on his sores. they are healing well. just gotta wait for him to keep shedding and i will keep checking him to see how its going.

So sorry to hear about this. This is precisely why I never bother with lights, I think they're just plain dangerous. What sort of light protectors are they? I would never use those metal things, they're just terrible, they have sharp bits that can seriously harm a snake besides getting awfully hot, metal being very good at conducting heat. A heat mat is much better for carpet pythons, or any snake for that matter.

If you are interested in light protectors, consider looking at something that is powder-coated, and ensure it is large enough that the light doesn't heat it up to the point of causing burns. Powder coating reduces the risk of injury because it keeps everything nice and smooth.

repta-pet ones are powdercoated , but as u now know it is very important to buy the right cage one that isnt close to the light / heat source from the sides or the bottom .

yeh i took the cage and the light out and i have put a longer one in it. it was because the light slipping down a bit and being a little close to the bottom the cage door part of the light.
