I have a 6 week old Diamond Python. I have had him for almost a week. He has now defecated. My question is, should I cause a disturbance and clean it up, or leave him for a few more days. I have done a 'spot' clean causing minimal disruption but, it's not properly clean. He is exploring his enclosure and seems to be settling in.

I have just fed him, so he is now on guard duty on the look out for more where that came from and I suspect my hand may be his next attempted meal (I'm not concerned about being bitten, just getting him to let go).

Should I provide filtered water, rain water or just tap water? I'm in Melbourne so the water is very drinkable for humans.

Whilst asking questions, there is great care taken to avoid mites with recommendations to heat treat or disinfecting branches, but some let their snakes out on the grass etc. I would like to have an indoor / outdoor enclosure (in a few years) but will this be putting him at risk of mites (it will be raised off the ground)?

Thanks

N.B. The sex is just a guess at this stage.

I'd say wait until the lump in his belly has gone down and then clean up, you don't want to leave a mess in there too long. I give my snakes tap water and haven't had any problems with it, it should be fine. I'm not really sure about mites and outdoor enclosures, all my snakes are kept inside, but I'm sure someone else on here would be able to answer :)
