hi all just wondering if boiling water kills mites that might be on logs found in the bush. the only reason i ask is cause real logs and rocks look way better than anything you can buy in the shop.so buy soaking these in boiling water should kill anything on it that the eye can't see.

thanks everyone i would try the oven but they are too long to fit how many days should i let them air before placing inside enclosure

I have been told to put them in the bath tub with a tiny amount of detergent for 24 - 48 hours...

Go for a walk along the beach, if possible a beach that has mangroves nearby.I recently did and found some really great looking driftwood, and coming from the beach/saltwater there will be zero chance of it having mites living in it.Failing that give it a good scrub and hose of then a thorough spray with T.O.D. to be sure

Boil some bleach, pour it over, then put it in the oven at 100C for an hour.

And if that doesnt take care of it, hose the rubbish off it, let it dry, spray some F10 on it, leave it 24 hours, wash it again and it should be fine.

yes boiling water will kill mites and the eggs, if you want to add some bleach to the water as well, leave it to cool then rinse with clean water 2 or 3 times if you have to, you can then air dry them in the full sun for a day or so until dry

I soak mine with hot water and bleach, Then rinse with boiling water over it! Make sure when pouring the boiling water over it that the water is clean coming off it! If not keep going until it is! then sit in sun for a couple of days and let dry!

sorry if im wrong about oven i herd it of =becs= when i got the beardies but it was a couple of months ago so i could be abit off corse

lol, i said scrub them, then put them in the oven still damp @ 120deg for half an hour to an hour. They will dry off in the oven.
Only works for smallish logs though, obviously ;)

Any temp over 55c will kill mites and their eggs. it only takes about 1 yo 2 minutes. There is no need to place in a oven for long periods. I purchased a Damoz Steam Cleaner. Its great for not only steralizing a cage, but the steam kills any mite and eggs instantly. The steam will penetrate any cracks where eggs may have been laid.

Can you see the eggs? I have heard you can see them walking across newspaper, but even then they are tiny.

Give this thread some time and you'll get alot of members saying preping wood is not needed, if i get round to it I will try and find a thread that has such comments.

Myself, I have only been told to soak in water for an hour, and avoid timber that has come off the ground, which leads to another question, why don't those who take their snakes outside get mites?! I will try to find the thread, it's amusing if nothing else.

I started a thread not long ago asking the very question, i wondered if taking your snake for a wander outside risks getting mites.
I take mine outside but he's always around my neck.

Yes, you can see the eggs in light coloured cages. Normally the mites lay them in a corner or a joint in the wood. They appear as a black mass in these areas.

As for taking your snakes outside go right ahead. Snake mite is normally only found in snake collections and is rarely encountered in the wild. There have been some mention of it happening but its rare. If it was common in the wild as some people suggest, there would be no snakes. They would have all died of blood loss , specially the hatchlings. Large investations can kill a hatchling in a week or two , and as far as I am aware no snakes in the wild carry a can of TOD to get rid of mite..
