I was given a spotty male just over a year ago, he turned 2 last december. He was owned by a teenager that didnt really know much about snakes and he had an RI and was quite sick during the colder months (in brisbane). The guy couldnt afford the vet bills and the 'hassle' so he said.

I took him on and took him to my vet who treated him with fortum injections combined with baytril thru a nebulizer for about 1-1.5 months. His white cells were low and the treatment worked well. He appeared to make a full recovery and come the warmer months he thrived.

He has always eaten well, was active when well, sloughed well, except when he was going thru the medicated stage, to be expected.

Now he has lapsed and appears to be sensative to the cold. His temps were 22deg/32deg but when the weather turned cold the temp dropped in his enclosure over night, so I bumped it up straight away, it is a constant 22/35 now. I obviously should have bumped it before it got cool as the RI is back. He is not active at all and appears pretty miserable. (not surprised, with wat the poor guy is going thru)

The vet has put him back on the injections, this time its the same injections .8m of fortum and 1ml gentamycin/9ml water in the nebuliser.

Does anyone have a problem snake with reoccurring RI, do you know if this will continue or happen every year??..Obviously if I dont catch the temps as the weather changes it is going to impact on him again.

Has anyone else had this happen and did your snake finally come good? Could u please post any information.

my other half was telling me about your problem. im thinking that the RI wasnt fully cleared. hence it reoccuring. has the vet given you a reason for the reoccurance? also i dont understand why your thermostat isnt maintaining the temperature. is the enclosure in a really cold drafty part of your house?

Hi fc, the vet seems to think that it reoccured as it may have not cleared up properly, after the first time he had it, he seemed to have been right 100%, then after all that treatment, about 1.5months later, he started clicking and blowing his throat again, he had another 20 treatments of just the nebulizer and then blood tests, which concluded that his white cell count was great.

Now, this year, I'd say and the vet agrees its was the cold house we were in and that a week of cold nights where the temp dropped in his encl. Bad on my behalf as now I realise that I didnt check the temp in his enclosure for that week first thing in the morning so for a week it was probably quite a low temp over night before I realised then bumped it up straight away. We have now moved and he is in a warmer part of the new house which doesnt get as cold as the other house got, I have also been checking the temp regularly, even getting up during the night and its constant now.
