This snake is very rarely mentioned, and I know very little about them. Are they colubrids? Venomous? Are they ever kept as pets? All I know is they live in water :? just thought about it now!

File snakes are not colubrids, they are in the family Acrochordidae which comprises of only a single genus, Acrochordus, and three species A. arafurae, A. granulatus and A. javanicus. In Australia only the first two are natives. They feel like jellyfish, smell like mud and taste like chicken!

Mmmmm chicken...

Just imagine, a File snake and a GTP together in an awsome combination display tank from Stein Enclosures.
That would be amazing!!!

OK who will be the first to order one of these....We are actually building one at the moment for a GTP and a turtle, with a separate attached bay for a beardie...should turn out great.

I hope you post some pics when it's done, that sounds like one amazing display.

An adult will feed on 2 large goldfish about every 10 days.

.........

hope this helps for more info get the book "an introduction to keeping & breeding Australian Reptiles"

I haven't read the publication however I would doubt gold fish would be the most suitable prey item. I'd be inclined to set up a nice display with a colony of congo tetras or australian rainbows. However would become costly replacing them.

Best Friends super centre sell fresh caught bait fish for like $1 for 10. That would be a good choice, very cheap. That what I'd use if I ever got one.

$500 may be what an adult would go for or a pair but last i saw (2-3seasons ago) newborns were going for $100ea. Goldfish seem to be an acceptable prey item for snakes and lizards(species that do accept fish of course) an old friend of mine who has a filesnake fed hers of goldfish no worries

yer i dont think i could knock back a sale like that 100 bucks thats crazy, i thaught they whould be heaps more. if anyone could inbox me a number or email to get in contact with someone that has them thats would be great. also does anyone have any photos of them?
eddie,

the problem with goldfish (if being bought from a pet shop) is you dont know what they have been treated with, farmed fish for human consumption such as trout fingerlings etc would be a better feed option and possibly cheaper too
