I have lost 4 frogs in 2 days and im lost is to whats wrongg. Frogs come out in mottly skin and green spots and deteriorate over the day then die. I have lost 2 mags and 2 red eyes and more are coming out in the spots. I tried betadine baths but they have still died. They have been in a new tank over the last month which was painted on the inside and had fake grass on the bottom. And I must say the ventilation wasnt crash hot. I removed all frogs from this tank and have placed in all seperate tanks but why are they all still dying from what I think is the source. Does anybody have any idea???

Thats Red Leg. go to your nearest herps vet and be prepared for some quarantine

The best case at this time to enhance the chance of making it to your vet appointment is to leave them soaking in betadine/water mix for as long as you can and changing the water daily/ half daily.

I very much doubt it was the paint this comes from other frogs, rocks from outside, any non sterile objects brought into their enclosure. I'm very sorry but this has a very high mortality rate. Did you introduce any new frogs to the enclosure in the last 3 months? have you been handling them without washing your hands?

Kind of looks like it could be Chytrid fungus, what ever you do be careful how you dispose of the dead ones as you don't want it to spread to wild populations. I could be wrong it may be worth asking on frogs.org.au Community :: Index

Sorry to hear about the losses how many have you got left??

Ben

you see the red underneath on the mags leg? and the red eye. This is how it presents itself early symptoms is the frog lethargic you see how skinny the mag is? I would put money on it being red leg.

I thought it looked like chytridiomycosis too, I havent seen a lot of chytrid cases though

Early stage chytrid presents with hyperaemic (red due to increased blood flow) in legs and feet as well Dannyboi. Lethargy and weakness is also a sign of chytrid. What makes you so certain that it's not chytrid?

I have experienced Red Leg With magnificents before. Its incredibly common in captive frogs for 1 and even more common with large numbers e.g. 11 red eyes. I have had vets treat it too. I am fairly familiar with it (Unfortunately.) The white stuff on the head is what happened to my GTF. His effects were more rapid.

fair enough, I wasn't disputing your knowledge on red leg. I was just interested because you were mentioning signs that are also associated with chytrid...so I was interested in why you were so adamant that it wasn't chytrid

i would be almost certain its chytrid fungi and not reg leg going by the skin discoloration which to me screams fungal and not bacterial but i will admit the symptoms of those the diseases are quite similar. I would isolate all your frogs, separate them to help reduce the spread through the colony. Google both red leg and chytrid and see what you think it is and treat accordingly. I am going to steal your pics aswell i hope you dont mind to pass on to some of my international froggy friends, see if they can help.

I had the same thing about 6 months ago, ended up being diagnosed as red leg as well as bacterial infections and there was another problem with it too, I lost all of my White Lip's to this disease, It allways started under the eye and would "push the eye out" and make it look like its bulging due to the swelling. I contacted the Frog Hospital in QLD which could also help you but I ended up loosing all of them. All because they where WILD Caught by some numb skull.

Unfortunately we can only speculate on what it is for sure, one thing i do know for sure is your frogs need anti-biotic's

Just Chytridiomycosis is spread by direct contact with infected frogs or infected water. Whereas Red Leg has numerous causes all of which can be blamed on husbandry.

what do you mean in the range of the disease?

I think we can agree that your frogs need a vet Redeye girl. So try to do that ASAP and hopefully they'll be able to advise you on an appropriate treatment strategy depending on if its fungal or bacterial

Yeah agreed. The Vet should be able to diagnose it with one quick look. (If they are any good). If either it will take some work to get rid of considering the amount of frogs you have. Make sure to call the vet before hand as they may charge you a consultation fee per frog. (In my view that is disgusting).

having a look around googling I have read that exposure to temperatures above 28 degrees will kill Chytridiomycosis perhaps upping the temp of your house for a while. As I'm sure it would be hard to get to a herp vet at 10 at night.
