I will be handling my first live snake tomorrow morning (if I don't chicken out like I did yast year).

I was brought up on the farm with the belief that "the only good snake was a dead snake". We mainly had brown snakes with the occasional tiger snake. I have picked up a dead brown snake by the tail (many years ago) after I shot it.

The snake that I will be handling is a 5 month old diamond. Sex unknown. Eats 1 weaner mouse(?) every 2 weeks.

Late last year the pet shop owner was standing in the main enterance of his shop sunning a diamond. When I got the chance to get close to him I did and was happily watching the diamond go up and down his arm. Our arms got to be within 1 foot apart and the diamond decided to check me out. It got within 6 inches when my mind said, "Hang on! That's a snake!!" So I backed off. The snake was willing but I wasn't.

If I don't chicken out this time, I will buy a snake.

I will let you know tomorrow of the outcome.

If everything goes OK I won't be picking it up tomorrow because I still have to get an enclosure. I am treating it like a "try before you buy" type of thing.

Cheers,
Wombat

Dude, controversy!!!! not the best thing to say on this site!!! LOL

But apart from that, good luck all the same and you should be fine mate. Confidence is the key, they can smell fear and will take advantage of it. Just relax and let the snakey do what it wants in your hands and it should be fine. It will just thing you are a warm tree to explore!!!

Good to know you've learnt the error of your ways mate :) Biggest thing with handling Pythons is confidence, I know it's easy to say but, just try and approach with confidence that it WILL NOT bite you and let the little beauty do it's thing :) If the owner knows you are nervous, and there's nothing wrong with being nervous, he should pick a good handler for you and WHEN all goes well well you won't look back :) Theres nothing quite like the pleasure of handling a nice python mate, just go for it and as I said, you won't look back.
Have a great experience and find a whole new way of life.
Good onya buddy :) And, let us know how you go yeah?

RE: Re: Handling first live snake tomorrow

Can you take a camera and get the owner to take a pic of you handling it, its normally easier if you have an ulterior motive like photography, takes your mind off what you are actually doing, holding a snake. hehe, your a terror jessie

Yeah, I'll pretend it's a large, dry, warm earth worm. You know! The type that don't break when you try to put them on the fish hook. :)

They want $450 for it and it was bred in Ballarat Vicoria. The pet shop owner doesn't have any pics of parents.

Cheers,
Wombat.

RE: Re: Handling first live snake tomorrow

If ur willing to pay that price to feel like u have a snake then so be it. i'm sure u'll feel more confident owning the snake if u have handled it prior to buying it, and had people with u at the time. Though if u could organise some time with angel and u can handle some of the pythons she owns i'm sure u could save a buck and still have confidence.

RE: Re: Handling first live snake tomorrow

yeah i an a little terror angel. wombat if u handle it tomorrow and u feel comfortable with that paticular snake and u dont mind paying 450 for it then buy it if u dont really want to spend that much i know u can get a much cheeper for sure so its up to u but if it turns out to be a little sh*t and has a bad temperment dont even consider it and if u buy him he may be a little moody for a few days anyways so dont get scared off and trust me a bite from that little guy will be hardly noticable

RE: Re: Handling first live snake tomorrow

Actually jimmy, out of the 4 murrays i have, only one has a bad temper, and i wouldnt sell her or even give her away to an inexperienced herper...... im not that mean........

Im out in werribee, VIC wombat, and you are welcome to come out and handle my snakes to your hearts content under my supervision, you dont have to buy one at all, i am happy to let you gain some experience and also get to know 3 different species of carpet to help you decide what if anything you want to buy as your first snake and also find you a breeder who wont charge you like a water salesman.
Just PM me to arrange a time and id be happy to have you over.

RE: Re: Handling first live snake tomorrow

wombat, I have just got my 1st, same as you bought up on the farm with not so fortunate ideas about these magnificant creatures. I was able to layby mine at the pet shop and go handle my little bewty when ever practicable and feed at feeding time. Over this period my confidence grew but the deal was that if our personalities clashed a full refund was available. Ask if you could do that then no one is missing out, better to find out before you get it home if enjoy each other. good luck and happy handling :D

RE: Re: Handling first live snake tomorrow

Don't panic if you sweat and shake, makes for great conversation and a good laugh whilst handling

RE: Re: Handling first live snake tomorrow

my theory is that its good to be bitten once or twice. makes you realise there isnt that much to it...
