We had a snakie come out of the egg earlier and its tail is deformed, from the cloaca down, on further inspection it looks like its hemipene are outside the body of the snake.

Has anyone experienced this before?

I have tried to take a picture of it but its hard with a wriggling snake, but i hope you can see what i'm talking about in the pictures.

Thanks

Awww, poor bugger..

I havnt had to deal with this prob in snakes, but have had a similar issue with an exposed penis in one of our other animals.

The probs can occur if the tissue swells, or bloodflow is restricted to the area.

If the hemi starts to dry out, you could use sterile saline solution to keep it a bit more moist, until someone with exp of this prob in hatchies can advise you.

Without seeing it in person, its hard to say, but im guessing the best chance for it would be to lube up the hemis, and try to get them back in. (not easy with a hatchie like that, I would imagine)

With the shape of the tail, it is possible that the hemis have nowhere to go, and developed on the outside for that reason.

Wish you and the lil one the best of luck. Hope someone with exp of this prob jumps on..

Thanks for your reply Blind snake.

I'm waiting on Damien getting home from work, but it doesn't look good for this lil fella :(

I had a Murray Darling that was missing the end part of her tail, not to the extent of your picture, just the very tip, she was fine.

Good luck Kylie,

Any update on the snakey? I have watching this thread avidly to see what the outcome is/will be.

I hope he is ok.. he is a little cutey

Eriquar he was a little cutie.

Unfortunately after seeking some advice it was decided the snakey was best put to sleep :(

We think there was some other issues with the snake as it was very slow and docile very unlike the other hatchlings, but that wasn't the basis of our decision.

It's all good we realised things like this happen when breeding reptiles. We still have 11 seemingly good hatchlings so we are happy just got to get used to things like this i suppose. At least we have some experience now so next year we can breed our darwins three female maccies beardies and gecko's.this sucks but thats life

Sad to hear that. I haven't bred reptiles but have bred finches and canaries before and sometimes nature can be cruel and heartbreaking. Its almost impossible not to be affected by it, especially when it involves baby animals.

I hope all the others stay healthy and grow quickly. Keep your chin up.
