We are currently building a new enclosure for our python. He has been in a glass tank with a heat pad. However, my new project is made out of an old timber tallboy that I have renovated & have put glass doors in front (size 80x80cm), but the whole enclosure is about 1 mtre sq & I really don't know the best form of heating for this new enclosure - any advice is appreciated.
Thanks

You will need at least one, if not two, heat lamps - a heat mat is unlikely to cut it in such a large space...

I would put in the heat mat and also look at maybe a ceramic heat lamp and a spot light.... heat lamp running day night temps and a spot light running what would normally be the hottest part of the day 10am-2pm maybe.... make it so you are replicating our days and nights...

have u looked at reptile radiators/heat panels?

Thankyou to everyone for your help. We have a diamond/carpet python 15 months old. He is great. All our children love him (even our youngest who is the same age).
I wasn't sure if it would be safe to use the heat mat on the bottom of the enclosure as it is timber - i'v seen some nasty burnouts on timber. At present we have the heat mat on over night - say from 6pm through to about 7am, then nothing in the day as he lives in the kitchen. The new enclosure will be going in the lounge room where there is reversal cycle a/c.
Appreciate all your advice.

Here is a similar enclosure (people are probably sick of seeing it) made from a dresser with glass doors, about 1m square. The ceramic heat emitter heats it very effectively. It is mounted under the basking shelf and controlled by a probe thermostat. There is a vent in the side wall near the floor on the side opposite the emitter (can't see it). The heat retention is much better than in my enclosures where the heat emitter is mounted on the ceiling.

I have another, larger, enclosure which has a reptile radiator. (Sorry, no photos.) It does NOT provide more heat than the ceramic emitter. The gradient is much steeper, but this is okay for the Murray-Darling carpet housed in that enclosure.

It is important to monitor your basking spot with a temperature gun, as it can get a bit too hot if you are not careful with thermostat probe placement.
