Hi, I'm currently building my first snake tank and had so issues with getting the temperature right within the tank currently I've got both 14w heat matt and a 50w ceramic heating bulb over the hot side of the tank both are connected to a simple brand thermostat.

These both are only getting up around 26.8 degrees currently wirh the prob being just anove the substrate where I'm currently aiming the hot side to be around 28 to 30 as I'm keeping a childrens python.

The thermostat is currently set at 33 degrees and when I try both the heating pad and bulb they are hot and have been measured around 31 with a independent thermostat.

I was wondering if I should increase to wattage or what else I should do to attempt to incress the temp of the tank.

And tip or help would be appreciated.

a heat mat and ceramic thing only heat up the air. They don’t put out any radiation that your animal needs. But you could use the ceremic heat emitter and a halogen at the same time??? And yeah up the wattage if you need to:)

The ceramics heat the air and also put out some radiant heat. Heat mats do very little to heat the air, they provide contact heat, which is generally the best way to heat a Children's Python.

Children's Pythons are not really heliothermic animals, so it's generally best not to use radiant heat for them.

OP: You should be aiming for a higher temperature at the hot end than 28-30. I'd never use a ceramic unit. In decades of breeding reptiles from pythons, colubrids, elapids, monitors, skinks, geckoes etc etc, I've never used one or wanted to; they're inferior to alternatives in every way - price, reliability, type of heat they put out, etc.

Use a higher wattage mat.
