My 6-1/2coastal i got for christmas had a loud whistle when he breathed out and now he has like blood under his scales on his underside. The past 2 days it has spread down his whole body. He is still wery bright and happy. My reptile shop looked at him and he seems to have redness around his breathing pipe now. I bumped up his temp to 31o but hes not getting better. I am realy worried about him!:(

Does any one know what it is and i need to find a good reptile vet in melb preferably northern suburbs.

KIND REGARDS

I was realy after a vet a bit closer as its obviously a breathing problem and i dont want to have him in a hot car and stress him out.

ok the one at Warrenwood is near Warrandyte so that about 30-40mins from you. or give one of them a call and ask if there is someone closer to you. the sooner you see someone the better.
Have you spoke to the people that sold it to you?

one other thing, I wouldn't take any reptile to a pet shop for them to look at it, as you risk taking home more than you bargained for ie, mites, viruses, if you need advice find a local breeder or go to the vet. ;)

I brought him privately as they were getting rid of him due to him being her daughters which she got him as a hatchy and now shes scared of him. I didnt take him to a pet shop it was my herp shop. and the temp is normaly 28o at the cold end so i put it up to 31o on the cold end so it is rather hot in there as that what i was told to do.

herp shop or pet shop same thing, if they buy or sell reptiles you are taking a risk.
Ring a vet asap so at least they might give you the best way of starting treatment, it is normal to have your hot spot set at about 32c and the rest at a few degrees cooler so it can move if it wants to.
keep us posted:)

I am good friends with the owners of the shop and i know all the animals are healthy. I know what the temps should be His is usualy at 31o hot spot, 28o cool end and i put it up to 35o hot spot, 31-32o cool end.

the loud whistle COULD be a respitory infection. Don't know what the red under the scales could be though.

Well done Willa, yes sounds like RI to me.

As your in Reservior go streight to Peter Cameron in Altona.
Go on the Western Ring RD and follow it down to the West Gate freeway, to Millers rd.
It will take you 30 minutes, that trip wont hurt your Python.

Jim Greenwood in Canterbury has retired.

I really recommend taking him to Brendan Carmel - actually, Brendan consults in the City at Melbourne Uni on Wednesdays, so if you call now, you might be in luck! He is very, very expeirenced...

I just got back from the vet. I took him to lort smith animal hospital as they have an exotic vet there and brendan carmel goes there on fridays. They checked his lungs and they said they sounded good (no fluid). They think its got some thing to do with an infection further up his wind pipe. They took some blood and there getting brendan to do the blood smears on friday. With the blood under the scales they think if its an infection that it has spread to the scales and it is causing some minor bleeding. They couldnt find any lumps any were so fingers crossed its not to serious.

Ill keep every one posted when i get the results.

kind regards
laura

Try the vet where the previous person when treated at Lort Smith animial hospital. Sometimes if you are financially strained they can reduce costs of their services.
