You also said feeding live was illegal. I'm not sure about down there but I know it's not illegal up here in QLD. Pet City, one of the biggest pet store chains, sell mice and rats that are not fit for sale as pets for snake food.

Bouncer, you'll find you will have to kill them before feeding them to anything. I think the rule is across the board. I buy all of my rats live also, but am not permitted under the guidelines of the license to place the snake in danger of getting injured due to a mucked up feed. I'd be very surprised it's not enforced everywhere. Admittedly I had to look long and hard to find it written anywhere, but it's definately there.

Wow, I'll have to read the fineprint. Although I will say I would never put any of our babies in danger. All but one will eat frozen anyhoo.

i went to a petshop (wont say where) to buy some frozen rats,,the young fella there sort of hummed and haad,and ask if i could come back in couple of hours.i said why,he says cos they r not ready yet.Ready?'well show me what u have' i said...He took me to a staff area to an old bar fridge,,,he opens the door to show me a shoebox with a mother rat and 7 pups,,of course each animal is using the warmth from the other so death was still a long way off...im no not soft ,generally, but i just felt like punching something,,i bought the lot and took them home where they were more humanely dealt with....ive got no problem with freezing a rat at a time..but to put the whole family in at once was.....maybe i am getting soft


p.s the mother was tame and very smart

On saying that Bouncer I had a quick look and could find nothing relating to the QLD regs on feeding live....maybe there are no regs??? Has anyone seen anything guidelines for QLD on this?? When the only reason is for the protection of the animal kept I can certainly understand the concern.

I woulda been urinated off, how alive were they when you got them?? woulda kept atleast one as a pet!! In qld, u are allowed to feed live although they do mention in the code of practice that this may harm the snake.

Hmm, I didn't think so. Maybe they should make it illegal. I know I still have one eating live but we'll change that and we're responsible enough to know what to do to keep her safe but gawd knows how many others out there just like to do it for kicks.

I have 3 rats at the moment, vanilla, chocolate and caramel. They live in the freezer.

Didn't read it all, but man what a bunch of ppl with heads in a dark smelly place. I didn't realise tossers like that still existed.
 
To be honest they must feel a little intimidated due to the fact they are passionate about something so far down the food chain! :lol: It'd be like me having a passionate desire about keeping prawns as pets, and all of you mongrels wanting to eat them the whole time! :lol: Does that make sense??? Or is it just me again? :p :wink:

There is nothing in the NT that says you can not feed reptiles live food. The pet shop where I get my food from have told me there is nothing wrong with a live feed as long as it is a bit smaller than the normal feed and you keep an eye on the process.
Our fella like's the chase of a live one.
