My sons spotted pythin "Bubbles" died this morning and i can't for the life of me figure out why.
She was only 4 1/2 mths old.
A couple of things about her to begin with. Her skin had a slightly milky tinge to her and she didnt move around much at all which i thought was a bit strange.

My setup for her is a click clack type enclosure inside a bigger enclosure. It is heated by a ceramic heater at 1 end so she has a cool end to go to if she wants.

I last fed her on Saturday afternoon and she had that feed without dramas.

I handled her this morning and she a bit cage defensive which is normal but once out she was fine and moving around like she normally does.

After i handled her i took her out into the sun in her enclosure so she could get a bit of natural sunlight which is something i have done before and when i checked on her 1/2 an hour later i noticed her eyes were cloudy so i assumed she was going to start shedding but when i looked at closer i couldnt see a heartbeat :cry::cry:.

Her enclosure is cleaned regularly and her substrate is fake grass.

My son is going to be devestated when he gets home from school today as it is suppose to be his 7th birthday present and now i dont know what i am going to do as we cant afford to replace it.

Can anyone please tell me what could have caused this.

Sounds like you may have cooked the poor thing in the sun . A snake can get very hot very quickly in a small container

sounds like you may have cooked your snake, you cant put them in direct sunlight in a click-clack, it gets very hot very quickly.. sorry to here, your son will be upset...

I can't offer any advice or comments, but a bit more information couldn't go astray.

1. How long have you had it for?
2. When you took it outside, you left it out there by itself in its clickclack?
3. Did you pick it up to make sure it was dead?

Dont want to sound rude, just a couple of extra questions.
Also if you want to know exactly what happened, a trip to the vet for an autospy will give more information than "internet vets" ever could.

Sorry for your loss.

1. We have had her for a couple of weeks
2. She was in the sun for about 30 mins but i checked her probably every 5 mins.
3. Yes i picked her up to make sure she is dead.

i feel for ya mate.. but you just cant put snakes out side in the sun in a plastic box.. it get way to hot..

that's quite sad, for your son :(

I have seen some spotted going in Bris for next to nothing this season - someone might be able to help you out with a replacement? Good luck.

We got her off one of the local breeders up here im just waiting for him to return my phone call.

Sorry for your loss. Sounds like its been cooked...plastic heats up very quickly in the sun and the snake would have had no way to escape that heat.

Five minutes is easily enough time to kill a small snake in the sun. Sorry for your lose =(

Sorry to hear that. These things happen unfortunately. We live, we learn.

sorry to hear that i had a mate that the same thing happened too left it outside in a tub didnt think it would be a problem and he cooked it gets way too hot way to fast especially in plastic

This made my day. From the moment it was born, it's welfare was in the hands of humans to care for it. Poor little thing suffered and died at the hands of inexperience. Sorry but I hope you don't get another one any time soon. It was an animal with needs and requirements, not a remote control toy.

And these things 'don't just happen', they are the result of neglect and inexperience.

The only part of that statement i agree with, is the last word...... 'inexperience'...... I am glad that you, 'KingSirloin', have never made errors in judgement of any kind but unfortunately some of us are human, and inclined to make errors occasionally. I would be inclined to put this one in the 'unfortunate accident' category.

I did a similar thing with some EWD babies a few years ago. I put them in diffused sunlight while I was cleaning their cage out and killed some of them. Small plastic containers and sun do not mix. Your animals can die in minutes.

Sorry for your loss! its hard losing an animal you love! i feel for your son! =[

Ignore the dangle berry who thinks mistakes never happen!

I agree with the unfortunate accident people. i understand it can be confusing when you hear some people say that snakes should go out in the sunlight at least for a bit every week and you think you are doing the right thing to find out it was done in the wrong way. accidents happen and this was just a really crap one. i would encourage you to get back on the horse, i am sure you are now aware that sunlight and plastic or glass dont mix. wood and mesh is the way to go with a cool shaded area for future reference.
and to king whatsits. im on the wrong page to quote you and cant be bothered but i believe you said inexperience... how do people get experience? making mistakes. half the stuff you learned, possibly more was probably from other peoples mistakes. when they were telling you the right way to do things were you having a go at them for being ignorant to begin with? yeah its a **** outcome from a mistake, but if your having a go at them for making one then you are essentially saying that you havnt learned anything from experience?

Yeah i have seen this happen before in a matter of 10 minutes. They heat up very quickly.

That is quite a shame, but you should realise that it is basically the same as leaving a baby or animal in a locked car. I doubt it would get any UV through the plastic lid anyway.

I understand people make mistakes, but don't take chances with the life of an animal. My thread was harsh for a reason. It is not something you just say 'oh well, live and learn' to. Go buy a plant.

Experience comes from reading books, talking to people, visiting forums, watching dvd's and documentaries, attending courses etc... before you 'experiment' with an animal's life.

I know it's bad luck and a lesson to be learnt, but it's an animal once again, not something to be blase about. I'm not attacking the owner as much as I am attacking the 'attitude'! Harsh lessons will be remembered! I want ppl to remember this so they can provide absolute safety to, and enjoy the company of their pets for all their life.
