Hi Guys,

I have bought two 7-litre sistema tubs to convert into Gecko "houses". I am wondering if anyone has any tips on making ventilation holes along the sides, attaching al fly-screen mesh to the lid (solder it on or silicon?).

I haven't done this before, although I know it can't be too hard (famous last words).

What is everyones preferred methods? Soldering iron, utility knife, power drill etc.

Everyone's suggestions/ideas will be greatly appreciated.

I just cut a hole in the lid and solder a piece of metal fly screen on, works a treat

use a soldering iron and melt holes through plastic. do it in ventilated room.

if you do them in sides, you can stack them.

cost about $40 in bunnings with thin and thick diametre points.

Sometimes when you try to cut or drill plastic it will crack and snap , so for any holes i just use the soldering iron to melt a hole. for cutting large pieces and hacksaw blade works.
Silicon works well...

soldering iron for ventalation holes ,saw a gecko setup in mag a few back and they just had the holes no need for mesh at all according to the breeder doing the article silicone can get messy if you havent worked with it much, ive split and cracked a few tubs with drilling bigw has black and decker soldering irons for about 30 bucks that have various tips including a sharp ended one that works fine:)

You can use a piece of wire heated on a gas burner, much smaller and cheaper than a soldering iron, if you want a really neat job make a template from MDF first

If you need a soldering iron , try bunnings , i got one with a pointed tip for $5
