Hi all,

Just wondering who to report a case of severe snake cruelty to...

Found out this afternoon (and I am still seething over it that a local business owner has released his pet snake (5yr old carpet python) up into his roof with no water, fully aware that the python was very ill, having been sitting in its water bowl for 3 days..

In my area, I can ring RSPCA (2hrs away), or the local wildlife carers/snake catchers (approx 1hr away)..

Should I ring both authorities? And who should I contact first in an emergency like this?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated - I only hope this guy is still alive!!

You will prob have to pay the snake catcher yourself, but if you told him the deal, he might release the snake to you? I don't think that the RSPCA would do anything. Soaking for three days could mean a shed; how do you know it's sick?

????????????

RSPCA won't care, who cares anyway, he is gonna be the one with a house smelling of dead animals cause he has a dead python in his roof

what i dont get is your posting severe cruelty ..... you found out this afternoon did nothing ....posted here for help on what to do at 11:15pm ??
Also unless he gives the snake catcher access to his house he cant get it out of the roof anyway

First of all, I did not "do nothing"!! I have tried my local snake catcher's mobile number, which was disconnected. All other relevant phone numbers are business hours only/non reptile related. Second of all, if you arent willing to help me, dont post any reply - I am after useful information, not a dressing down, thankyou very much!

Thankyou to all other people who replied so quickly with useful advice. I am simply trying find the correct and current after hours numbers for my area (Townsville or Whitsunday - I am in the Bowen area) as well as any advice if anyone has had a similar experience.

I know the python is ill, as the owner said "I think it has a tick". I am leaning more towards either mites, or being too hot, as he was housed in a standard fish tank.

I am not saying that I want to adopt the python, nor am I qualified to catch him, I just want to get him the help that he so desperately needs.

A python with a tick released in a roof? What a horrible world we live in.

Hi

I reccomend take a movement advice over and asking the guy to give the snake to you. Im sure when you tell him if the sick python dies in his roof that he will have to deal with the stench for the next few weeks!!!.

If he does give it to you...post its symptoms on here, than we can go from there with what would be the best course of action for the snakes future.

All the best.

a snake catcher would need permission from the house owner not you
how do you know hes not pulling your leg??

how is he ill because he has sat in his waterbowl for 3 days???? maybe he is soaking for pre shed???? not ill as not uncommon
i understand your anger over what you have been told but you never said you personally saw any of this you said found out/told so how do you know its sick,,,, has he really put a pet in roof maybe he has a rat problem and he is stupid enough to think his python will catch them and then come down the man hole back home??
i really just dont understand the 3 day water connection to diagonis that its sick ,, mites,, shed,, enclosure to hot /cold self adjusting temp??

maybe he knows as the owner told him he was going in the roof next week so he is drinking and soaking up as much water as possible ready for his venture in the roof

rereading this you seem more annoyed not that it has been released into the roof,
but released with no water in the roof because it has been sick,

I don't understand... Have you seen the snake and it's enclosure, and that's how you know that it is sick or has mites? Or are you going by what the owner has told you?

voodoo's advice of taking the movement papers over to the owner seems fairly sound... Let us know how you go with it.

lol this thread is seriously dragging on. If its an emergency call the police. 000 or 911. every second post is taking the piss out of you.

I am a licensed for the prossie/airlie area, but as others have said the occupier of the property would have to give me permission to enter his house and remove the snake. Also under the terms of the permit i am only supposed to remove snakes "where human safety is compromised" and in addition who is going to pay me, i am sure her wouldnt want to as he released the snake in the first place?

My contact number is on my website.

Such a wierd post. A snake with a tick... my my, it must be desperately ill...

Just call your wildlife licensing authorities, it's illegal in all states to release pet snakes, they can deal with it. If it wasn't on licence, he's in the poo, and if it was on licence, he's also in the poo for releasing it...

Not really your problem.

Thanks to everyone for their advice.. I will ring firepac and find out the exact laws of releasing pet snakes. I also have a spare 3ft enclosure here that is sitting dormant (just needs lighting). I will ask the owner if I can move him to my place, but I am a little nervous as I am still in my first year of herping, and therefore will have to learn very quickly if i am to treat and care for this poor fella.... Im sure all of you will help me though... Thanks again everyone :)

There are no ifs or buts... it is illegal, period, to release captive (pet) reptiles. Just call you wildlife authorities - one call, they'll do it all... if they're interested.

Illegal... yes... Unless you could count your roof space as an enclosure. If the roof is a sealed unit there's no way in or out. Snakes live happily in roof spaces for years, though normally they have some access to the outside world.

Cruelty... no... In fact, (I might be wrong here) I believe it's not mandatory to take a sick animal to a vet... I believe it's optional. Pretty damned horrible... but never-the-less optional.

So - the sensible posts in this thread are in fact very sensible and there's no need for the thread to continue or for you to enter into a war of words with these people... We'll assume you've done the right thing and we look forward to a happy ending with a beautiful tick free python in a clean well lit enclosure with plenty of hides.

 I love this forum, good for a laugh. Good luck on your quest :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:
